SOCCER PLAYOFFS
The pairings for the 2010 District 31 Soccer Tournaments were announced Wednesday at a district meeting held in London.
South Laurel (15-2-1) will host the tournament, which will begin Monday night with two games on tap. The Whitley County Colonels (7-6-5), a first-year participant will play North Laurel (3-10) at 6 p.m., followed by Oneida Baptist (4-7) going against Middlesboro (1-11-1).
The Whitley County-North Laurel winner will play South Laurel, the top-seeded team, Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Corbin (6-8-1) will play the winner at 6 p.m. Wednesday night.
South Laurel (15-2-1) finished the season with four straight wins following a loss to Madison Southern 6-2, September 23. The only other loss game at Richmond Model when the Cardinals lost 2-0. The only other blemished on their schedule was a tie against Whitley County back on September 7.
The Cardinals feature one of the top scorers in the state in Jeffrey Poston who has 60 goals on the season. Tanner Chaney is the team’s number two scorer with 12 goals.
Should Whitley County get past North Laurel, the Colonels would meet South Laurel for the third time this season? After losing the first game 6-1, the Colonels held Poston in check and tied the Cardinals 1-1. Since that game, the Colonels have a 6-3-3 record.
Corbin is the favorite to come out of the bottom bracket. The Redhounds defeated both OBI (3-0) and Middlesboro (7-0). The Redhounds and South Laurel played once this season with the Cardinals winning, 3-0.
The championship game is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.
Girls’ District
South Laurel and Corbin are the number one and two-seeded teams in the girls’ tournament as well.
South Laurel (10-7-1) will play the winner of the Whitley Co. (4-11)-Middlesboro (1-12) game. The Lady Colonels and Lady Jackets will play Tuesday at 6 p.m. Whitley County has beaten the Lady Jackets twice this season, 3-1 and 5-0. They lost to South Laurel 10-0.
In the bottom bracket, North Laurel (5-15) will take on Bell County (1-10) at 8 p.m. Tuesday with the winner playing Corbin (12-4-3) Thursday at 6 p.m.
Corbin, led by sophomore Amerah Dixon’s 27 goals and Whitney Baker who has 14, have outscored their opponents 66-29 this season. Goalkeeper Sydni Roaden has allowed just 1.5 goals per game and has nine shutouts this season.
The Lady Redhounds went on a 9-0-3 streak before losing to Somerset 4-2. Their only district loss came at South Laurel, 6-1.
The championship will be played Friday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.
