Six teens rushed to hospital after overdosing
Six teenagers overdosed on drugs early Tuesday morning, and two of them remain in the hospital on respirators, sheriff’s deputies said Tuesday afternoon.
Whitley County Sheriff’s Detective Chuck Davis, who is heading the investigation, said Deputy Glenn Bunch was dispatched to the residence of Shannon R. Cox at 143 Hightop Road about 3:47 a.m. concerning a reported drug overdose.
Six teenagers, three boys and three girls ages 13 through 17, were having an impromptu party at the residence, and overdosed on an undetermined drug or drugs, Davis said.
All six were taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin.
Two of the teens were released Tuesday, two were kept in a regular hospital room, and two others, 16 and 17 year old boys, were on life support, and in critical condition, Davis said.
Police are subpoenaing the medical records of all six juveniles, and Davis said he wouldn’t know what drug or drugs were involved until he gets the toxicology reports.
Davis said the home’s owner gave him permission to search the residence, and that he found no controlled substances there, except for prescriptions belonging to the woman, and her two sons.
So far no one has been charged, but the case is still under investigation.
If police can determine who sold or gave the drugs to the juveniles, then that person could be charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, unlawful transaction with a minor, and second-degree wanton endangerment, Davis noted.
Officers assisting with the investigation included: Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tim Shelley, Lt. Todd Shelley, Deputies Jason Wilson and Jerry Noe, and Kentucky State Police Trooper Mike Witt.
