Shutout Victory
Williamsburg is one point away from an undefeated season. The Yellow Jackets won their third game in a row last week, shutting out the Indians of Oneida, Tn., 21-0.
It was the Alumni Bowl and Homecoming all rolled into one and first-year coach Jerry Herron was more than pleased with his team’s play. “Any time your defense pitches a shutout, you have to be happy,” he said after the game.
“It was a good hard fought game,” said Herron. “Oneida hit well and our guys played well, tackled well, hit well and our defense played really well.”
It was the second shutout of the season. Williamsburg has allowed just one touchdown since losing to Knox Central in the Pioneer Bowl, August 18.
“Our offense had a few miscues and a few penalties but played well though,” said Herron.
Senior quarterback Thomas Frazier was the man of the night. He led the Jackets on the ground with 138 yards on 17 carries and passed the ball for 247 yards. He hit on 19 of 33 passes.
Teammate Chase Hamblin was again his main target. Hamblin caught the ball for two touchdowns and 119 yards on eight catches. However, it wasn’t a one-man receiving crew. Frazier hit Will Moses for 39 yards on three passes, Aaron Brock 31 yards on three passes and Charlie Bryant for 29 yards on two passes. Freshman Dusty Brown got one pass for 29 yards.
“Thomas had an unbelievable game,” said Herron. “He had a complete night.”
“We moved the ball on them as I expected we would,” Herron said. “We had 409 yards of offense. We continued some silly mistakes and had some mental errors. We had some penalties in the red zone at the wrong time. You have 409 yards and only put up 21 points, you are doing something wrong at the end, we didn’t finish but it was a hard fought game.”
“The kids really responded to the contact,” said Herron. “We just got after them and played hard.”
Williamsburg scored twice in the first half. Frazier took it to the Indians on the first drive of the game, leading his team down the field. The Jackets moved the ball 75 yards in just six plays as Frazier scored from one yard out with 9:51 on the clock.
The Jackets scored again early in the second quarter. Again it was a 75 yard drive but this time he hit Hamblin on a 10 yard pass with 10:58 left in the half. Senior Aaron Root had a big play in the drive, a 20 yard run to set up a first down at the Indians 45.
Frazier followed with runs of 7, 12 and 16 yards before hitting Hamblin for the touchdown.
Herron’s team put the game away with 2:47 left when Frazier found Hamblin open in the end zone for a seven yard TD. The big play in the 65-yard drive was Brown’s third down catch he took to the four yard line.
Herron feels his team came out of the game in good shape and will use the week off to get ready for its district opener at Pineville in two weeks. “AJ (Jusino) strained his hamstring but should be ready to go by then,” said Herron.
“We want to work on our execution this week,” said Herron. “We would like to be a little more sharp on our routes. We will continue to tackle and hit this week. We want to be in shape and hit some people.”
“We’re playing decent defense going into the district,” added Herron. “We’re hitting people, we just have to cut down on our mental errors.
