Sheriff warns of potential Medicare, Social Security scams
The Whitley County Sherriff’s Department has received multiple complaints from residents concerning individuals attempting to garner personal information.
Sheriff Colan Harrell said in each of the complaints, the suspects claim to be affiliated with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which administers federal programs such as Medicare and Social Security.
The most recent complaint came from a Woodbine resident Wednesday. Harrell stated the suspect claimed to work for Medicare and asked to meet with her at her residence. The resident told the suspect she had contacted the sheriff’s department. The suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived.
“The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department has spoken with a representative of the Federal Trade Commission, which investigates identity theft,” Harrell stated. “They advised no person should relay personal information (such as one’s Medicare account number) to unknown persons via phone. They also advised that home visited are usually done by care providers, whom the homeowner would likely know from previous, official encounters.”
Harrell noted that phone scam seek person information such as dates of birth and Social Security numbers which the individual may then use to steal identities and hack into personal accounts.
In addition to identity theft, Harrell stated that unsolicited visits offering to perform services such as building repairs, may involve two individuals. One will occupy the homeowner’s attention while the other “cases” the residence, noting items to target in a future burglary or theft.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call or unsolicited in-person visit is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
