Several Veteran’s Day events lined up for Friday
Local schools and other organizations are planning various Veteran’s Day ceremonies Friday to celebrate area veterans and thank them for their service.
Below is a partial list of some programs being planned.
• Whitley County High School and the JROTC program will be holding a free breakfast at 8:15 a.m. Friday for all veterans.
It will be followed by a one hour ceremony in the Whitley County High School Gymnasium, which starts at 9 a.m., to honor all veterans.
• Williamsburg Independent School will hold a Veteran’s Day Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. in the J.B. Mountjoy Gymnasium.
Veterans and their families are asked to park at Main Street Baptist Church and to enter through the hall doors.
• At Corbin High School, students will be allowed to dress in military clothing Friday in order to recognize family members, who have served. Students will also be allowed to hang something on the outside of their locker if they wish.
• Corbin Primary School will have a parade-type drive-thru event for veterans starting about 10 a.m. Friday.
• The Whitley County Cooperative Extension Office, which is located at 4275 N. US25W, Goldbug, will host a free chili dinner for veterans starting at 5:30 p.m. You can call the extension office at (606) 549-1430 to register.
• The Extension Center Community Art Center, which is located off Main Street in downtown Williamsburg across from city hall, will also be having a free chili dinner for veterans and their families from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Friday. The dinner will include dessert and drinks.
• The Daniel Boone National Forest will waive fees at all U.S. Forest Service-operation recreating sites in honor of Veteran’s Day Friday, including: Laurel River Lake Boat Ramp, Natural Arch Scenic Area and Appletree Shooting Range in McCreary County, and the Whitman Branch Shooting Range in Whitley County.
This waiver doesn’t apply to recreation sites operated by concessionaires or reserved group-use areas.
The Forest Service will also waive fees at the following locations Friday, including: Bee Rock Campground in Laurel County, and Great Meadows Campground and Barren Fork Horse Camp, which are both located in McCreary County.
