SENIOR NIGHT
Corbin volleyball seniors Hannah Helm and Destini Engle wanted to close out their home season with a victory and they did that Monday night, rolling pas the Knox Central, 25-10, 25-18 for the two-set victory.
“It was a good win on Senior Night,” Corbin Coach Liberty Roberts said. “They were a little unfocused, but overall they enjoyed the evening and that’s what matters.”
The Lady Redhounds (13-15) jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set behind the play of Vanessa Wiseman and Allison Worthy. Wiseman, the Lady ‘Hounds middle-hitter, was on her game, finishing with nine kills in the opening game.
Knox Central pulled within 9-6, but Corbin went on a 6-0 run and pushed the lead out to 15-6. It was all Corbin after that.
“We lost our focus in the second set,” Roberts said. Corbin had trouble putting away the Lady Panthers, who came from behind to tie the game at 12-12. The lead changed hands several times before Corbin took control behind the serving of Worthy, a freshman.
Corbin tied the game on a service point at 14-14, then four straight points by Worthy and the Lady Redhounds gave the host an 18-14 lead before Knox Central could stop the run.
“I feel like they played to the team that they were playing,” Roberts said. “We have done that all year, but they have stepped it up against some of the tougher teams. And the teams that are not as aggressive we backed up on our offense too.”
Helm finished out the game on a strong note. The senior went to the line with the Lady Redhounds ahead, 20-16 and served four aces to put the game away. Corbin took the second set, 25-18.
“Hannah doesn’t normally serve, but she came through strong to finish the game,” Roberts said of her senior.
“I feel like when Hannah is on, she can do some incredible things,” added Roberts.
Corbin will close out the regular season with three straight road games. They were scheduled to play at Bell County Tuesday night before going to Whitley County Thursday night. The will end the regular season at Middlesboro, Tuesday, Oct. 4.
Roberts said she would be looking for consistency for her Lady Redhounds in the last two weeks of the season.
“We absolutely need to work on consistency,” Roberts said. “Once we get through these games we will work on that. We have played twice a week and in several tournaments, so we have not had a lot of practice time.”
“We want to work on consistency with serving and passing,” Roberts said. “If the girls can get that down I feel like we have a real aggressive line-up at the net and we can put a lot of people in there, but they have to get some good passes off and they’ve got to make their serves.”
