Selvy honored, WHS volleyball wins regional title, other local teams competing in state tourneys
There’s been a lot of big things happening in the world of local sports in recent days, including Corbin Redhound legend Frank Selvy being inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
To get more info on Selvy’s upcoming induction, check out the Hall of Fame page at www.collegebasketballexperience.com. According to the site, the official induction ceremonies are to be held on November 20 in Kansas City. Accompanying him in the Class of 2022 will be John Beilen (winningest coach in Michigan history), Jim Calhoun (3x national championship coach), Richard Hamilton (Connecticut, Detroit Pistons), Jerry Krause (NAIA Hall of Fame coach), Lon Kruger (longtime coach in the NCAA and NBA), Larry Miller (North Carolina, ABA single-game scoring record holder), Jimmy Walker (Providence, Detroit Pistons) and Roy Williams (3x national championship coach at North Carolina).
Selvy’s bio on the National Collegiate Hall of Fame website says, “From 1951-54, Furman’s Frank Selvy piled up points like few players have in college basketball history. He led NCAA Division I in scoring both as a junior with 29.5 points per game and as a senior with an average of 41.7, and overall averaged 32.5 points over his three-year career.”
The bio also mentions the famous game between Furman and Newberry in February of 1954 in which Selvy scored a record-setting 100 points.
Selvy went on to play for nine seasons in the NBA, making two All-Star Team rosters during his pro career.
• In other sports news, I would like to send out a big “congratulations” to the Williamsburg High School volleyball team for successfully defending their 13th Region All “A” Classic championship crown over the weekend.
The Lady Jackets picked up victories over Barbourville, Harlan Independent and Jackson County to secure their 2022 All “A” regional title. They will travel to Richmond later this week to compete in the All “A” state tournament at Eastern Kentucky University.
Best of luck, ladies!
• Another local team who is on the cusp of a major championship win is the boys soccer team at Corbin High School. After winning a sectional title in this year’s Kentucky 2A Championships, the soccer Hounds advanced to state tournament play last week.
Corbin faced Belfry in their first game of the 2A state tourney on Sept. 8, defeating the Pirates 4-0 to advance to the semifinal round. A quick look at the KY 2A Championships website shows that Coach Armando Cima’s squad will next face Christian Academy – Louisville, and if they are successful there, they will move on to the 2A state finals along with either Boyle County or Warren Central.
Go Redhounds, win state!
• FYI… the Whitley County Lady Colonels volleyball team will also be competing in a Kentucky State 2A Championship tournament in the coming days. Ironically, they too will face CAL in their opening game. Should they win, they will meet up with either Lexington Catholic or Calloway County in the tournament semis. We certainly would like to wish these ladies the best of luck as well!
• Finally, I have to give a shout out this week to the Corbin High School football team after their big win over visiting Pulaski County in week 4. The football Hounds have already topped one of the best Class A programs in the state in Pikeville, and now they have defeated one of the best 5A teams in the Maroons.
This week, Corbin will go on the road to square off with a top 2A team in the Somerset Briar Jumpers. Can they keep their great success going? All signs point to “yes,” but we will find out for sure under the Friday night lights!
