Search for missing Whitley man ends tragically

The search for an elderly Whitley County man, missing since early Thursday morning, ended tragically.
According to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, a Golden Alert was issued for 85-year-old Orie Perkins early Thursday evening. He was later found dead in his vehicle, which over an embankment near the intersection of HWY 25 and Mountain Ash Road.
Perkins had last been seen leaving his home on Lot Mud Creek Road in southern Whitley County around 6:00 a.m. The alert was issued about 12 hours later following fears that he had medical conditions that could endanger his safety.
According to an official release from the Sheriff’s Department, Perkins worked for the Whitley County School District in various capacities, including as a principal and coach.
The Sheriff’s Department, Kentucky State Police, numerous local fire departments and other volunteers participated in the search to locate Perkins.
No foul play is suspected in his death. The cause of his death has not yet been determined.
