SCORING MACHINE
For the second time this year, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets have scored over 100 total points in a football game. Earlier this season the Jackets was on the losing end of a 66-39 decision to Somerset as the teams combined for 105 points. Not to be outdone, the Yellow Jackets came out on the winning end last week as Williamsburg outscored Evarts, 61-48 as the teams combined for 109 points.
It was a shootout indeed as senior quarterback Thomas Frazier hit on 24 of 42 passes for 350 yards while scoring five touchdowns. Frazier ran for two more accounting for seven of the nine touchdowns. Senior Aaron Root ran in two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Frazier hit his favorite receiver, Chase Hamblin ten times for 133 yards and two touchdowns. But, that wasn’t the star of the night. That was senior Steve Jeffries who had nine catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
The amazing thing is that only seven points were scored in first quarter and that a two yard run for Frazier, giving the Jackets a 7-0 lead. From that point on it was more like a basketball contest with each team getting a slam dunk each time they had the ball.
Williamsburg (5-3) scored four touchdowns in the second period and led at the half, 33-18. But, the Jackets quickly found that wasn’t enough to put away the Wildcats. Evarts outscored Williamsburg 16-8 and pulled within 41-34 at the end of three quarters.
Hamblin, who has been nursing a foot injury pushed Williamsburg ahead 47-34 early in the fourth quarter and when Root went in for the conversion the Jackets led 49-34. But, Aaron Pike broke loose for a 57 yard touchdown with 9:21 on the clock to get the ‘Cats within 49-42 after Adam Helton’s PAT.
Williamsburg then went to the ground to melt down the clock and the Jackets responded with a 10-play, 70 yard drive that was capped by a 16 yard TD by the Bulldog, Aaron Root. The conversion failed and the Jackets led 55-42 with a little over three minutes remaining.
The Jackets got a big break when Evarts fumbled the ball and senior A.J. Jusino recovered deep in Evarts territory. Root scored on the following play as the Jackets took a 61-42 lead that sailed the game.
Williamsburg will hit the road this week as they travel to Cumberland, a 21-15 winner over Lynn Camp.
