Sacred Heart Christmas Tree Memorial Garden to stay lit until Jan. 6

If you have driven down Master Street in Corbin since Dec. 3, then chances are you have seen Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s Christmas Tree Memorial Garden lit up at night with its manger scene and 75 decorated Christmas trees.

Father Damian Anumba got the inspiration for the Christmas tree memorial garden last year when he saw one at a parish in New Jersey while he was on a priest retreat.

According to his secretary Karen Quinlan, Father Damian had her purchase the trees, which she found at Nieman’s Christmas Tree Farm in Lexington. The parish came together in getting everything needed for the trees so this would be possible.

Members of the parish and the community “purchased” the trees, and each tree sold has a sign on them in memory of or in honor of people’s loved ones. A portion of proceeds go to organizations in the community that help those in need, Quinlan said.

On Dec. 3, Father Damian blessed the memorial garden and lit the trees, which will stay lit until Jan. 6.
