RUNNER-UP

The Corbin Lady Redhounds finished second in their own Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament Saturday, losing to Halls High School in the finals, 15-0.
Despite the championship loss, the Lady Redhounds played three impressive games, beating Chardon High School of Cleveland, Ohio, 5-2, Lexington Catholic 4-3 and Rowan County 7-2 in the semifinals of the tournament.
“It was a great weekend for our girls,” said Corbin Coach Chris Hart. “We came off an average performance in Florida then came back and played a team like North Laurel (14-0) which was a tough loss then we got back on track with Whitley County.”
“I wanted something to get us back on track like I knew we could be and the tournament was perfect for us,” said Hart. “We played well as a team, we hit well, we defended well and kept our errors down and it was a great weekend for us.”
The Lady ‘Hounds opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Chardon High School, a school of 1,200, near Cleveland.
The Lady Toppers jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning but Corbin responded with two runs in the top of the fourth. Back to back errors allowed Andria Shirar and Callie Hendrickson to reach base. A walk to Kendra Igo loaded the bases with no outs.
Allison Woolums drew a walk to force Shirar home, tying the game at 1-1. One out later, Savannah Smith’s sacrifice allowed Corbin to take the lead for good as Hendrickson scored for the Lady Redhounds.
Hendrickson hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning as Corbin went ahead, 4-1. The Lady ‘Hounds added a solo run in the sixth when Woolums led off the inning with a single to left center field. She eventually scored on a base hit by Beth Hensley.

Corbin surprised 24th ranked Lexington Catholic with two runs in the top of the first inning. Morgan Brock drew a walk then one-out later, Shirar hit a home run over the center field fence for a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Knights tied the game in the bottom of the second inning but Corbin was able to retake the lead in the fifth when Shirar led off with a walk. She later scored on a passed ball as the Lady Redhounds took the one-run lead.
Hensley reached base in the sixth inning on a one-out single then later scored on a base hit by Sara Hill.
Corbin 7, Rowan Co. 2
The 2-0 record in pool play put the Lady Redhounds in the semifinal against Rowan County. Corbin struck quickly as the ‘Hounds scored six runs in the top of the first and never looked back in beating the Lady Vikings.
Brock and Hill opened the inning with a pair of walks. Shirar followed with a base hit to score eighth-grader Sarah Woolums, running for Brock. Hendrickson reloaded the bases and Igo’s base hit to right field scored Hill and Shirar for a 3-0 game.
Allison Woolums followed with a two-run double and Hensley hit a two-out single as Corbin took a 6-0 lead.
Shirar scored again in the fourth inning when he reached base on a triple to right center field. Hendrickson followed with an RBI.

Halls, one of the top teams from Knoxville, rolled past the Lady Redhounds in the championship game. The Lady Devils entered the contest without a run scored against them. The Lady Devils scored five runs in the first and added four in the second for a quick 9-0 lead.
Corbin failed to score on the game but did have four hits. Hill, Hendrickson and Igo had singles while Woolums had a double in the fourth inning.
Corbin’s Brock led off the bottom of the first with a walk and went to third on back-to-back hits by Hendrickson and Igo. The three runners were stranded when Woolums flew out to leftfield.
“I think everybody stepped up,” said Hart. “It was a total team effort. You can’t really point to any one person. We just started to click and began to jell together as a team.”
“Since we have moved some people into some new positions it has taken a while,” said Hart. “They are starting to get used to each other in those spots.”
Corbin will host Jackson County Thursday before going to Nicholasville Friday to play West Jessamine. They will play in the Lexington Catholic Classic Saturday against Raceland at 2:30 p.m.
Bell County will come to town Monday.
