Reynolds, Chaffin run past Raiders
It was the Jimmy Chaffin and Josh Reynolds Show Friday night as the Lynn Camp Wildcats ran past the homestanding South Floyd Raiders, 35-30 in the first-round of the Kentucky High School playoffs.
The Raiders (8-3) put up a fight at the beginning of the game and rallied in the fourth quarter but in-between it was all Lynn Camp as Chaffin and Reynolds scored 35 points and ran for 326 yards.
Chaffin led the way with 190 yards on 13 carries while Reynolds scored the first two touchdowns of the game and added 136 yards. Freshman Joe Roskopf contributed 80 yards on seven rushes.
The win sends Lynn Camp to Williamsburg and gave District 7 three of four wins against their mountain rivals. Only Pikeville came away with a victory in the first week of the playoffs.
It will be the second meeting between the Wildcats, the defending regional champion and the undefeated Yellow Jackets.
Lynn Camp coach David Mitchell felt like turnovers hurt his team the last time the two met at Mitchell Field where the Jackets came away with a 25-18 win.
“We’re going to have to play sound defense and not turn the ball over,” Mitchell said. “The last time we turned the ball over three times.”
“They didn’t turned the ball over any and hopefully this time we will force a few,” said Mitchell.
The Wildcats have been plagued with injuries most of the season and Mitchell feels his team is in better shape this time around. “I don’t know if we are a lot healthier but we are about 25 percent better with Reynolds and Chaffin coming off injuries and both of them have gotten better.”
“Turnovers,” said Mitchell, “That will be the key to the game.”
That was something the Wildcats controlled last week as Lynn Camp jumped ahead of the Raiders. Lynn Camp got off to a good start when the defense stopped the Raiders on the first drive of the game. A blocked punt set up the first Lynn Camp TD at the 20 yard line.
It took the Wildcats (7-4) two plays to get on the scoreboard from the red zone. Reynolds broke loose on a 15 yard run. Chaffin added the PAT and the ‘Cats led 7-0.
South Floyd did answer the challenge when Wes Hall, the highly touted running back scored for the Raiders with 7:20 in the opening period.
The host even took an 8-7 lead when quarterback Ryan Johnson hit Justin Slone for the conversion.
It took less than a minute for Lynn Camp to get its second touchdown on the scoreboard. Reynolds scored on a 15 yard run with 6:53 left in the period.
Chaffin then got in the scoring act in the second quarter with two touchdowns. Chaffin scored on a 68 yard run then followed up with a six yard run late in the period. He added the conversion and the Wildcats led 28-8 at the half.
Chaffin scored yet another touchdown in the third period that proved to be the game winner. He scored on a 72-yard run then added the PAT.
However South Floyd rallied. The Raiders scored a touchdown late in the third period then added two fourth quarter tallies to pull within 35-30.
