The Corbin High School boys golf team will head back to Bowling Green this year for the Kentucky High School State Golf Tournament at the Bowling Green Country Club after winning their fifth straight region golf title Tuesday.
Juniors Alex Davis and Connor Maquet led the Redhounds to the first place finish with a team total of 314. Davis and Maquet shot a pair of 77’s for the 18-hold tournament played at Woodson Bend Resort in Somerset.
Senior Cody Ellis shot a 78 while junior Henry Moore added an 82 to round out the Redhounds’ team total. Senior Luke Cooney was the fifth Redhound. He shot an 85.
Corbin finished seven strokes better than second place Jackson County, who had a 321. Clay County sophomore, Tyler McDaniel of Clay County, who finished fifth in the state tournament last year, won the tournament with a three-under par 68.
Corbin Coach Brad Harris said his team achieved its goal of returning to the state tournament. “Our number one goal was to win the region again and get back to the state for a chance to win the state title,” Harris said. “Our scores were a little higher than we would have liked but that’s going to happen from time to time. We played like a team and fought till the last putt fell, which is what it takes to win. I’m very proud of our performance.”
This is the fifth year in a row that the Redhounds have taken the 10th Region title. Harris said, “I’ve got to give the glory to God, to bless the team with fine young men who all have tons of ability and the same vision and goals.”
“This year’s team, like the teams from the past, has had a great support system from their family, friends, and the community. They work hard and truly believe in themselves and each other. It’s a beautiful thing when athletes put their own personal interests second to the interest of their team. These guys play selflessly with a lot of heart, which in turn, creates great unity,” Harris added.
What will it take to bring home a state title? “I think we will play great at the state. We are going to give it our best! We have traveled almost every weekend and played in the best tournaments in the state against the best teams,” Harris said.
Our season has been a great success from beginning to the end. We have reached a lot of our goals but there’s one left that we still want to accomplish. We know that if we play great we have a shot at winning. I can’t wait for us to get started on Friday morning.”
The Redhounds, who finished ninth in the state tournament last year, will play in Bow Green, Oct. 5-6.
