Results from Wednesday night’s baseball/softball district championships
Three coverage area teams were contending for district titles on Wednesday, May 20, but unfortunately, none of them would be able to walk away as champions.
The Corbin Redhounds baseball team and the Lady Hounds softball team were both facing off with South Laurel Wednesday at Williamsburg’s Briar Creek Park for this year’s 50th District championships.

The Lady Hounds fell to the Lady Cards by a final score of 11-1 in six innings, giving them an 11-20 record on the season. Despite having to settle for runner-up in the district, Corbin still lives to fight another day in the 2015 13th Region tournament, which they will host next week.

The baseball Hounds found themselves trailing 7-0 in the sixth inning of their game with South Wednesday. Things were not looking good at this point, but they were able to score four runs in the top of the inning to cut the lead to 7-4 and gain some much-needed momentum.
The Cardinals added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, and Corbin was unable to answer in the top of the seventh. The resulting 8-4 loss puts the Redhounds at 16-15 going into the 13th Region baseball tournament, which they are also hosting next week.
Both the baseball and softball region meetings will be held this Saturday, May 23 at Corbin High School. Look to www.thenewsjournal.net for more information on that as it becomes available.

Also playing for a district championship Wednesday was the Lynn Camp Lady Cats softball team, who faced host Knox Central for this year’s 51st District title.
The Lady Cats went up 5-0 in the third inning, and looked as if they would be able to secure their first-ever district title in program history. The Lady Panthers came roaring back, however, scoring nine runs to win the game 9-5.
Same as Corbin, Lynn Camp will now refocus their attention on next week’s 13th Region tournament. They will enter the tournament with an overall record of 11-21.
