Results from the 2023 KHSAA state track and field championships
Last week, athletes from all four of the News Journal’s coverage area high schools made the trip to the University of Kentucky to compete in the 2023 state track and field championships.
Results from the Class A championships on Thursday, June 1, were as follows:
From Williamsburg…
• Lylah Mattingly, on her birthday, placed tenth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.04. She finished in sixth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.67.
• Madison Peace placed seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.03. She placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.59. She also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.61.
• Ben Hale finished 21st in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.96. He finished 22nd in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.68.
• Chase Meddles finished 23rd in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.15.
• Alex Gamble finished fourth in the boys’ shot put with a distance of 44-09.00.
• Abigail Stephens finished 22nd in the girls’ discus with a distance of 81-06.
• Joseph West finished sixth in the boys’ discus throw with a distance of 129-11.
• Zach Bowen finished seventh in the boys’ discus with a distance of 128-10.
• Alana Mah placed sixth in the girls’ long jump (15-09.50), fifth in the triple jump (33.01.50) and third in the high jump (4-10.00).
• Nate Goodin won a state championship in the boys’ long jump (21-04), and finished runner-up in the high jump (6-04.00).
• Ethan Moses and Zyler Housekeeper tied for twelfth place in the boys’ pole vault with a height of 9-06.00.
• The girls 4×200 relay team (Mattingly, Peace, Mah and Zoie Brown) placed fifth with a time of 1:49.67.
• The girls 4×800 relay team (Emaly Powers, Ryan Fields, Emma Meadors and Heaven Warren) placed 14th with a time of 11:15.22.
• The girls 4×100 relay team (Brown, Erika Glanton, Arianna Ramirez and Heidi Wiles) placed 17th with a time of 54.51.
• The girls 4×400 relay team (Brown, Meadors, Kaylee Rains and Lillie Roark) placed 19th with a time of 4:43.76.
• The boys 4×800 relay team (Housekeeper, Nick Baird, Henry Bowling and Max Rose) finished 20th with a time of 9:24.63.
• The boys 4×400 relay team (Meddles, Baird, Hale and Hunter Thomas) placed 20th with a time of 3:49.04.
• Overall, The Yellow Jackets tied for ninth place out of 46 teams while the Lady Jackets finished eighth out of 39 teams.

• Abby Mabe finished ninth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:39.87.

• Maddie Jo Russell finished ninth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.56. She placed 13th in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.03.
• NaShawn Brooks finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.07. He placed 18th in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.48. He also finished 15th in the triple jump with a distance of 39-08.00.
• Jaycee Frye finished 15th in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:57.97.
• Mary Simons finished 12th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.59.
• Kylie Clem finished 15th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.44.
• Tye Stevens finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.81. He also placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.39.
• Jayce Stewart finished 12th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.42.
• Connor Messer finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.78.
• John Hail finished 24th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.51.
• Alex Herren finished 18th in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:53.43.
• Hayden Llewellyn finished 13th in the long jump (19-01.75) and was runner-up in the high jump (6-06.00).
• Emma Good finished 18th in the triple jump (30-09.00).
• Blake Lawson finished 16th in the triple jump (39-05.50).
• Belle Estep finished 24th in the high jump (4-06.00).
• Dylan Stacy finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 12.06.00.
• Parker Stacy finished ninth in the pole vault with a height of 11.06-00.
• The girls 4×800 relay team (Herren, Simons, Frye and Mary Hope Jackson) placed tenth with a time of 10:41.34.
• The girls 4×100 relay team (Russell, Clem, Grace Gibson and Davie Smith) placed 15th with a time of 52.19.
• The girls 4×400 relay team (Frye, Clem, Jackson and Simons) placed 12th with a time of 4:25.83.
• The boys 4×800 relay team (Messer, Hail, Coleman Anderson and Ethan Slone) placed third with a time of 8:09.53.
• The boys 4×200 relay team (Stevens, Stewart, Blake Lawson, and Zander Curry) placed fifth with a time of 1:32.41.
• The boys 4×400 relay team (Stevens, Anderson, Stewart and Messer) finished runner-up with a time of 3:27.24.
• Overall, the Redhounds finished in fourth place out of 44 teams.
Results from the Class 3A championships on Saturday, June 3 were as follows:
From Whitley County…
• Ethan Wilson placed 23rd in the shot put with a distance of 40-04.25.
• Lucas Queener placed 23rd in the long jump with a distance of 18-03.00.
• Jamie Fuson and Brayden Mahan tied for 18th place in the high jump with a height of 5-10.00.
• The boys 4×100 relay team (Mahan, Canaan Parsons, Rowan Walters and D’Shawn Henderson) finished in 20th place with a time of 44.40.
