The 2022 13th Region tennis championship tournaments have been taking place at Corbin High School since last week. After opening round, quarterfinal and semifinal round play, the championship matches were set to take place on Monday.
However, due to rainy conditions the championships were postponed to Tuesday evening, and final results were not available by press time.
The finals of this year’s regional tennis tourneys were dominated by the host Corbin Redhounds, with each match featuring CHS players, including two instances of teammates squaring off against each other for first place honors.
The duos of Dylan Koen/Quinn Maguet and Daniel Byrley/John Ball both picked up convincing victories in the semifinal round of the boys doubles bracket to earn the right to face each other in the tournament finals.
Meanwhile, in girls doubles action, the team of Rachel and Katie Morton advanced to the championship round, facing fellow Lady Hounds Allison Lundy and Olivia McArthur.
In the singles divisions, Nate Hill defeated South Laurel’s Will Wagers in the semis, advancing to the championship round along with Knox Central’s Alex Smith.
Lindsay Jones handily defeated Clay County’s Elly Rader in semifinal action, meaning she will face North Laurel’s Jaron Gray in the tournament finals.
The KHSAA state championship tennis tournaments are scheduled to kickoff in Lexington next Tuesday, May 31. Tournament seedings will be released in the coming days, and more information on all area players who have qualified for 2022 state competition will be made available inside next week’s edition of the News Journal.
