The Corbin tennis team split in action against arch-rival Middlesboro Monday at the Corbin High School courts. The boys won 4-1 while the Lady Redhounds lost to Middlesboro 3-2.
“The boys are playing really well,” said Corbin coach Curt Hart. “We picked up some impressive wins.”
Eighth grader Lance Freeman got the praise of his coach with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kausick Mohan. “That was a big win because Mohan is one of the top singles’ players in the region,” said Hart.
Senior Barrett Freeman rolled past Khlid Eluahen 8-0 in his match. Freeman is preparing to defend his region title later this month.
Junior Matt Norvell blew past Eli Rasmussen 6-0, 6-0.
In boys’ doubles’, Ryan Logan and Blake Freeman defeated Neil and Akash Patel 6-0, 6-0 in the number one match. “Logan and Freeman are the top doubles team in the region,” added Hart.
The lone loss of the day saw Brody Freeman and Lee Crawford fall to Ben Knuckles and Chris Akers, 4-6, 4-6.
The boys took a 9-2 record to Whitley County Tuesday night.
Earlier in the season the Corbin ladies defeated Middlesboro 7-2. However, Monday the Lady Jackets turned the tables with a 3-2 win over Corbin.
“These are the top two girls’ teams in the region,” said Hart. “Any time we play you can throw out the records because it is going to be a tough fight.”
Monday was no exception. In singles, senior Courtney Head downed Avani Dholakna 6-2, 7-5. “Courtney has worked very hard in the off-season to defeat this player,” said Hart. “She was really focused for this match.”
Laura Crawford lost to Megan Mars 6-4, 7-5. “It was the best match I have seen her play this season,” said Hart.
Junior exchange student, Liv Ibing defeated Ashley Roark, 6-2, 6-1 in an easy win.
In the doubles’ Corbin lost two thrillers. Melanie and Leah Hart lost the number one match to Emily Osborne and Emily Schnider in a tie-breaker 11-9. The Hart’s won the first match 6-4 but lost the second set 4-6, forcing the showdown in the tie-breaker.
Haley Farris and Jennie Powell did the same in the number two doubles. The Lady ‘Hounds lost the first match 2-6 but came back to win the second set, 6-2. They lost the tie-breaker 11-9.
The teams will be on the road later this week, going to OBI Thursday and North Laurel Friday. They will be at home Monday to face Knox Central.
