The Corbin High School boys golf team closed out the home portion of their regular season with wins over Barbourville, Knox Central and Lynn Camp Monday at the Tri-County Country Club.
Sophomore Chandler Maguet and John Morgan Hamilton led the Redhounds in their 14th regular season victory without a defeat. Maguet shot a season low for nine holes recording a four-under par 31. Hamilton was close behind with a 35.
It was “Senior Day” for Isaac Wilson and Jordan Maguet. Wilson finished with a 37 while Maguet had a 41 on the day. However, brother, Conner edged him out for the fourth spot with a 39.
Barbourville, led by Ryan Gamble took second in the quad meet with a 169. Knox Central had a 191 and Lynn Camp a 257.
It has been a very successful season for the Redhounds and coach Brad Harris has had the luxury of having two teams entered in all of the tournaments. Corbin started the season with an 11th place finish at the Franklin County Invitational then the “A” team won the South Laurel Invitational with the “B” team taking fourth.
The “A” team was second in the Warren East Invitational in Bowling Green and finished third at the Garrard County Invitational.
The teams first and second in the Corbin Invitational then the “A” team won the Southeast Kentucky Golf Conference Tournament two weeks ago at Crooked Creek in London. Last weekend the Redhounds finished third in the Somerset Invitational but was awarded fourth after a scorecard playoff.
For the season the Redhounds have a 99-15-1 record in both tournament and regular season play, beating 99 teams along the way.
“We’ve played solid all season so I expect us to come out and play strong in the region tournament,” said Harris. “Our depth has really helped us this year. It has helped our top five stay consistent. We’ve had good solid scores.”
Brothers Conner Maguet (8th grade) and Chandler have led the pack most of the season and the two have battled for the number one slot. Chandler finished tournament play with a 73 in the Somerset Invitational and will go into the region as the Redhounds number one player. He finished second to Somerset’s David Snyder in the tournament.
“We’ve had some really good scores lately,” said Harris. “John Morgan (Hamilton) has played real well lately and the rest of the guys have played pretty solid all year.”
“I look for us to have a good showing in the regional,” Harris said. “Somerset has to be the favorite with it being on their home course at Eagles Nest. Then I think you have to look at us, Clay County and South Laurel.”
“But anyone can come up and have a good day and finish in the top two and go to state,” he said.
