Redhounds snap losing streak: Colonels’ losing streak reaches three games
Coach Jeremy Philpot’s Corbin Redhounds have bounced back from their four-game losing streak, picking up wins at home against Franklin County, Somerset and Clay County to even out their season record at 4-4.
The Redhounds outscored their opponents by a combined 41-15 in picking up two wins Saturday and a win against Clay County Monday night.
“It always takes a little while for hitting to catch up to the rest of the game because you don’t get to see a lot of live arms in the off season.” said Philpot of the improved hitting. “Add to that the fact that we saw some good arms early so it was tough sledding for the first few games. Some guys have begun to get more comfortable in the box and with their approach and they’ve gotten to see it pay off recently.”
Corbin pounded out 10 hits while scoring 11 runs in the 11-10 win Saturday against Franklin County.
Cameron Combs had three hits, including a double, in three trips to the plate.
Walker Landrum had two hits, including a homerun.
Mikey Neal got the start on the mound, giving up two runs over four innings to get the win.
In the second game Saturday, Bradric Helton pitched a five-inning complete game for the Redhounds, giving up two runs to get the 15-2 win over Somerset
At the plate, Mo Carmichael had two hits, including a double, driving in four runs.
Combs also had two hits, including a homerun.
Corbin continued the offensive tear Monday night, with 14 hits in the 15-3 win over Clay County.
Kade Elam collected three hits, including a triple, leading to three RBI’s.
Jeremiah Gilbert started for Corbin and gave up three runs in the five-inning complete game, striking out six and walking none.
The Redhounds were scheduled to travel to Danville Tuesday night for a game that had not yet been completed as of press time.
Corbin will begin its longest roadtrip of the season Thursday when they face Knoxville Central in the Clinch River Challenge in Clinton County, Tennessee.
After a second game Friday against Heritage out of Maryville, Tennessee, the Redhounds will travel on to Fort Walton Beach Florida for five games beginning Sunday in the Fort Walton Beach Bash.
“As we travel on Spring Break our focus is still going to be getting better every time out,” Philpot said. “Our schedule doesn’t get any easier as we face a couple of traditional powers in Tennessee before seeing the likes of Owensboro Catholic and Louisville Male while in Florida. Hopefully some warm weather will help our bodies recover and re-focus before district play starts when we get home.”
Whitley County Colonels
The Whitley County Colonels will be looking to end a three-game losing streak on Thursday when they host Clay County.
After defeating Southwestern last Thursday and Harlan County last Friday, Whitley County lost at home Saturday to Rockcastle County and Great Crossing and then Monday against North Laurel.
Whitley County got out of the gate quick with an eight-run first inning against Southwestern en route to the 13-2 win.
The Colonels sent 11 hitters to the plate in the first inning. Caden Petrey led off with a double and Matthew Wright and Sam Harp followed with singles to give Whitley County a 2-0 lead.
Harp got things going in the second inning with an infield single and scored later on a fielder’s choice for a 9-1 lead.
RJ Osborne pitched two-and-a-third innings, giving up two runs to get the win.
Whitley County took an early 4-0 lead over visiting Harlan County after two innings and got four innings of shutout pitching from Tyler Rose in the 11-1 win.
Petrey highlighted the scoring with a home run in the fifth inning, to go along with three RBI’s in the game.
Rose gave up just two hits while striking out five and walking none.
Whitley County got out to an early 2-0 lead Saturday against Rockcastle County, but couldn’t keep pace with the Rockets’ offense in the 13-6 loss.
The Colonels took a 2-1 lead after three innings Monday against North Laurel, but couldn’t make anything else happen at the plate after that in the 5-2 loss.
Mason Croley started on the mound for Whitley County, giving up four runs on three hits over six-and-a-third innings, while striking out 11.
Whitley County will host Clay County Thursday, Perry County Central Friday and Pulaski County Saturday before traveling to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the Cal Ripken Experience beginning Monday.
Williamsburg Yellow Jackets
Coach Bryan Hopkins’ Williamsburg Yellow Jackets continued their offensive explosion last Thursday and got a dominating pitching performance Drew Damron in the 15-0 win over Lynn Camp.
The Yellow Jackets put 17 runners on base with nine hits and eight walks and those runners were constantly on the move, swiping 13 bases in the game.
Henry Bowling led the effort with three hits and one walk, while stealing five bases.
Darmon gave up one hit and struck out four, needing just 40 pitches to complete the game.
Williamsburg was scheduled to kick off the 13th Region All “A” Baseball tournament Tuesday night at Jackson County.
The game had not yet been completed as of press time.
The winner will play the winner of the game between Redbird and Middlesboro/Barbourville Wednesday night, with the championship game slates for Thursday night.
