Redhounds roll past Cougars
Friday’s opening round playoff match-up between the home-standing Corbin Redhounds and Morgan County was over almost before it got started. The Redhounds waltzed to a 53-0 win, keeping their record perfect at 11-0 for the season, setting up a second round showdown with Bath County (8-3) this week. As for the fast start, Corbin coach Steve Jewell said the team did exactly what he wanted them to do in establishing dominance in a hurry. “We just wanted to go out and start fast and just get out of there healthy,” Jewell said. “We were able to play a lot of kids and execute some things we needed to work on.” Corbin wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Lance Freeman connected with Corey Sewell for a 49-yard touchdown strike to make the score 6-0 with just 14 seconds gone by in the game. Then, on Morgan County’s first play from scrimmage, Sewell was at it again, intercepting Morgan County quarterback Jared Curd’s first pass and returning to the Redhound six-yard line to set up a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ben House to make the score 14-0 with 11:24 to play in the first quarter. The Cougars didn’t fare much better on their second drive of the game either. After being forced to punt on 4th and 13 to go, Sewell returned the kick 60 yards to paydirt to push the lead to 20-0 with 8:29 to play in the quarter. Corbin continued to score at will and pushed the lead to 26-0 after Michael Campbell rumbled 38 yards to the endzone too with 3:50 to play in the period. A touchdown pass from Freeman to Aaron Manns put Corbin on top 33-0 with 11:55 to play in the half, and one final first half score gave the Redhounds a 40-0 lead at halftime. Derek Mahan and Trace Vorbeck closed out the scoring for Corbin with a pair of touchdowns to make the score 53-0. Freeman completed five-of-seven pass attempts for 99 yards and three touchdowns, while the Redhounds out-gained the Cougars in total offense, 188 yards to just 22. As for this week’s game against Bath County, Jewell said he expects a lot of running from his opponent and remains cautious with the mindset of his team. “The biggest thing that worries me right now is that we have had three or four blowouts here recently.” Jewell said. “A lot of games where kids have gotten to play, but at the same time that worries you. “I expect Bath County to run a lot, but they will still try to spread you out with some short passing plays,” he added. “We have to be ready to play and execute as usual.” Kickoff for Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Corbin’s Campbell field.
