Redhounds looking for revenge against NCC
Revenge will be on the minds of the Corbin Redhounds Friday night when the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds come riding their big charter buses into downtown Corbin. The teams met in Newport last year in a regional showdown with the Breds winning 28-16.
Corbin Coach Steve Jewell said the key to a Corbin win will be keeping the NCC offense off the field as much as possible. “We have to contain their running game. They will try to spread you out and put you in running situations, get you in one-on-one situations with the running back (Mark Kelly) and quarterback (Rob Kues). They both run the ball extremely well.”
“They have a couple of good receivers, but still I think their bread and butter is going to be running the ball,” said Jewell.
Kelly had a big night last week against the DeSales Colts when he rushed for 153 yards and five touchdowns.
On the season, Kelly has 24 touchdowns. He has 1,575 yards on 209 carries. Kues has 11 touchdowns on 129 carries and 664 yards. He has thrown the football for another 13 touchdowns. His stats read, 108 of 191 with only two interceptions for 1,407 yards.
Kues’ main target will be #10 Ben Parr, #82 Marion Escalante or #16 Nate Rawe. The three account for 11 of the 13 touchdowns. Parr has 31 catches for 471 yards while Rawe has 22 catches for 379 yards.
Jewell said the ’08 Thoroughbreds are very similar to last year’s team. “They are as just as good. They run the ball a little bit better and have an excellent blocking line,” said Jewell.
“I don’t think they throw the ball as much as they did last year,” said Jewell. “But, again they are running the ball more. It all equals out.”
“They have a very good ball club, a very good defensive ball club,” Jewell added.
“It’s definitely a winnable ballgame,” said Jewell. “We were winning at half-time last year, we let them have a couple of series in the second half and they gained some momentum against us and ended up losing that ballgame.”
“We’ve got them coming here at our place. I feel like that is an advantage for us and we don’t have that long trip that they have,” said Jewell.
“The kids are excited about this week, they are still coming down off the win last week,” he said. “Those teams that lost last week can reflect the rest of the year where we are trying to work towards this year.”
“We earned our right for another week,” he said. “We feel like we have a good shot as long as we play with a good effort and have the intensity and play good physical football.”
