Redhounds fall
It may not have been the upset that the Corbin girls sustained Tuesday night against Knox Central, but the Panthers did pull off a surprising win over the Redhounds in Barbourville, 75-72.
Some late free throws may have cost the Redhounds the road win. Corbin hit only five of 12 in the final period when the Redhounds had built a 63-59 when Deke Barley hit one of two from the line after Josh Crawford had scored in the paint.
Knox Central freshman Cody Miller hit a close range shot before Aaron Manns went to the line for a one-and-one. He missed the front end of the bonus and Chad Messer knocked down his fifth three-pointer of the game, tying the score at 64-64.
Crawford then went to the line where he hit one of two, putting the ‘Hounds back on top with 2:29 left in the game.
Messer answered with his sixth three-point shot and Knox Central had the lead for good.
However, the Redhounds still had several opportunities at the line but couldn’t cash in.
Down 73-68 with seconds remaining, Isaac Wilson hit a lay-up and was fouled. He hit the free throw, pulling the Redhounds within 73-72.
Corbin got the ball back on a Messer miss from long range and Wilson went to the basket once again. He missed the shot but was fouled and went to the line with :19 left on the clock. He missed the front end of the bonus but hit the second for a 73-72 score.
Messer iced the game with 12.9 seconds remaining when he hit two free throws.
Crawford led all scorers with 24 points while Messer finished with 20 points. Miller netted 17 points.
The Redhounds (11-5) will be back in action at Wayne Co. Friday.
