Redhound Theatre presents: ‘Elf, the Musical’

Corbin High School’s Redhound Theatre is kicking off the holiday season by bringing the popular Will Ferrell move, “Elf” to the stage.

The story of Buddy the Elf, who leaves Santa’s workshop at the North Pole to find his real family that lives in New York City.

“Buddy realizes something is different about him from the other elves,” said CHS Theatre Director Rebecca Liford-Hibbard. “When the meeting with his real family doesn’t go as planned, he goes to Macy’s where he meets a beautiful girl.”

Junior Skyler Jones has been cast as “Buddy.”

Hibbard said Jones had a supporting role in Redhound Theatre’s “Beauty and the Beast” last spring, playing “Lumiere” the candlestick.

“He is a really talented young man, who is really funny,” Hibbard said of Jones, adding that when you talk to him, you see some of the characteristics you associate with Buddy.

“On the stage, he is Buddy,” Hibbard said of Jones.

Hibbard said a cast and crew of 50 are involved in the production, and it is not just high school students.

Students from the primary, elementary and, several middle school students are cast in various roles.

“It really involves the spectrum of students at Corbin schools,” Hibbard said.

Hibbard said it is not just current Redhounds that are making the production possible.

In addition to the music, the cast has had to learn multiple dance numbers.

Hibbard said Redhound Theatre alum Martin Jones and Hannah Jenkins choreographed the dances for the show.

“They come back and help in a variety of ways,” Hibbard said of Redhound Theatre alum.

“It is wonderful that they are so active in the program.”

In addition to choreographing the dances, Hibbard said it has been a challenge to choreograph the scene changes because of the number of changes and the volume of props and scenery involved in each.

“Much of the work has been getting the changes done and getting them smooth,” Hibbard said.

Opening night is Thursday with the curtain going up at 7 p.m. at the Betty Hamilton Center for Performing Arts at Corbin High School.

Additional performances had originally been scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

However, because Corbin High School football is playing in the state championship game, two performances will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Additional performances will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 7-9.

Tickets are available at the door prior to each performance.
