Redhound Soccer
Despite its 3-0 loss to Danville in the finals of the All “A” Regional Soccer Tournament, it was a good week for the Corbin Redhounds. Corbin blasted Campbellsville in the first-round of the tournament, 10-1 then upset a tough Somerset team, 2-1 to reach the finals.
In the championship game, the Admirals came out aggressive and put the pressure against the Redhounds. Danville took five strong shots at the goal in the game’s first ten minutes. However, keeper Max Sisson was able to get a hand on several of the balls coming his way or the defense staved off the early charge.
Danville did get on the scoreboard early enough when Chris Bright scored just after a nice run by Corbin’s Trey Manaco. Then five minutes later Jeffrey Ricker scored on an assist by teammate, Ross Snead to take a 2-0 lead.
The Admirals’ defense made it tough on the Redhounds as Corbin got only one shot on goal in the first half while Danville took seven, hitting two for the lead.
The second half saw the defending champions fire plenty of balls at Sisson. The Admirals took 16 shots but Sisson played an outstanding goal and had eight saves while just one slipped past for a goal. That came in the 48th minute of the game or 32:20 left in the second half when Alen Karapndzic recorded the third goal of the game.
However, the Admirals didn’t let up on defense and allowed Corbin only one good shot. That came in the 69th minute when Monaco took the ball down the field and got off a hard shot but Chris Oster was there to defend the goal and get the save.
Bright was named the MVP of the tournament. Corbin’s Monaco and Sisson were named to the all-tournament team.
Corbin 2, Somerset 1
It was an exciting Thursday night when the Redounds knocked off the Somerset Briar Jumpers to reach the finals. It was the first time Corbin had made it to the finals and to beat an outstanding team like Somerset was icing on the cake. Zach Brown got the Redhounds on the scoreboard in the 10th minute.
Somerset tied the game in the 48th minute when junior John Polk scored. Somerset looked strong in the second half but the Corbin defense refused to fold. A Monaco direct kick led to Corbin’s second, game winning goal. His kick ricocheted off a teammate into the path of Jarrod Wilcheck who put the ball past the keeper in the 59th minute.
Sisson, who made some incredible saves against the Admirals, also saved the day against Somerset with two outstanding saves late in the game.
Corbin 10, Campbellsville 1
Monaco had a big night against the Campbellsville Eagles scoring four goals while four other teammates got in on the action. Chase Pugh and Brown added two goals each. Dominic Valentine scored once and Sisson came out of the box to play the field and added a goal.
Corbin exploded for six goals in the first half as Monaco took control for the Redhounds and led his team to the lopsided win.
