REDHOUND ROUT

The old saying that it is not over until the fat lady sings didn’t apply in Corbin’s win over Knott County Central Thursday night. The Redhounds never gave the fat lady a chance to tune up as Corbin rolled over the hapless Patriots, 71-6.
Corbin (5-2) scored 41 points in the first quarter and led by that margin after the first 12 minutes of action. This game had caution written all over it by the end of the first period. Caution of running up the score, the Redhounds could have easily put a 100+ on the scoreboard. The Patriots tried to get in a track meet with the Redhounds last year and lost 85-34.
Senior Josh Coppock got the scoring started for the Redhounds when he scored on the third play of the game from 10 yards out. Coppock opened the game with a 59-yard catch on the first play of the game. Saxon Okuma’s extra point made it 7-0 with just over a minute gone off the clock.
The first Knott Central possession resulted in a Matthew Taylor interception that he returned to the six-yard line. Coppock struck again on a six-yard catch from quarterback Ty Cobb.
The kickoff went awry as the Patriots’ Evan Potter tried to pick up the ball inside the 10-yard line, but a hit by Hunter Grubb left Potter on the ground as Coppock scooped up the loose ball for his third touchdown in less than three minutes. Okuma had a rare miss on the PAT, but Corbin led 20-0.
A three-and-out gave the ball back to Corbin at the 25-yard line. Three straight passes by Roman Mitchell to Taylor and Josh Jewell had the Redhounds in the end zone for a fourth score. Jewell caught the nine-yard TD pass with 6:43 left in the quarter. Okuma made it 27-0.
Another quick three and out saw yet another short kick as Brady Foley returned the ball to the five-yard line. Derek Mahan scored on the following play. Okuma added the extra for a 34-0 advantage.
The third try for a Knott Central punt saw the ball go over the kickers head and downed at the five-yard line. Alex Wynn recovered for the Redhounds and was rewarded with his first carry of the night when Corbin went on offense. Wynn, a senior, scored from five yards out pushing the lead to 41-0 after Okuma’s kick.
The next three quarters belonged to the reserves and junior varsity units.
While Corbin was making adjustments to its offensive units, Knott Central put its only touchdown on the scoreboard when Anthony Smith scored from five yards out with 4:46 left in the half.
Corbin then added two touchdowns in the final minutes as Nick Mills scored on a nine-yard carry at the 2:54 mark. Wes Tipton added the conversion for a 49-6 score. Freshman Taylor Waddle intercepted a Patriot pass and returned the ball 30 yards to the end zone making the score 55-6. Ben Gosser, a freshman, added the extra points as Corbin went to the dressing room with a 57-6 score.
Waddle and follow freshman, Derek Woolum, added touchdowns in the second half to account for the final margin.
Corbin travels Leslie County Friday night looking for their second district win of the 2010 season and 43rd in a row since losing to Green County ten years ago.
