Redhound Rout
It was a fun night for the Corbin High School seniors as the Redhounds rolled to an easy victory over the Oneida Baptist Mountaineers, 83-53 in their final home game of the season.
“I thought we played pretty well,” said Corbin coach Tony Pietrowski. “I was a little worried about this game because Oneida has a very athletic and skilled team. I thought if we overlooked them or didn’t come in and play aggressively we could be in for a dog-fight.”
If that was the case Corbin won the fight early in the first quarter while the Mountaineers won the battle early in the second period.
Corbin (14-10) shot out to a 14-2 lead in the first three minutes as seniors Andrew Parks and Jordan Noble went on a scoring spree for the Redhounds. Parks had seven points in the opening run while Noble added five points. Junior Ryan Tate actually gave Corbin the lead for good as he manuervered his way down the lane for a basket.
OBI (9-14) finally settled down and outscored the Redhounds 8-4 in the final four minutes of the quarter and went to the second trailing Corbin, 18-10.
In the second quarter OBI’s Dean Jalloh hit four three pointers to keep his team in the game. The Mountaineers, who have a win over the Clay County Tigers this season, went on a 12-5 run and closed the gap to 25-22 before Corbin called a time-out with 4:32 left in the period.
The Redhounds responded to Pietrowski’s challenge with a 5-0 run to give Corbin some needed breathing room. Parks answered with a basket in the lane before eighth grader, Josh Crawford hit one of two from the line. Crawford missed the second free throw but Parks split between two defenders and got the put back for a 30-22 score.
OBI refused to quit and cut the lead to one (30-29) as Jalloh and Lawson scored seven unanswered points.
Corbin came back late in the quarter and took a 7-0 run of its own to the dressing room. Noble hit a three pointer at the 1:20 mark followed by a Ryan Swim basket and a rebound bucket by senior Brad Lawson. The Redhounds led at the half, 37-29.
Parks opened the second half with back to back baskets, giving the Redhounds a 41-29 lead. That was enough to get the Mountaineers on the run as Corbin quickly took a 46-31 lead on a three point basket by Noble and a rebound basket by Swim.
Corbin led 57-43 at the end of the quarter then poured it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mountaineers, 26-10.
The seniors, Lawson, Parks and Noble all exited the game with 2:10 left on the clock to an outstanding ovation. The three combined to score 59 of the 83 points posted on the Gilliam Gym scoreboard. Noble led the way with 30 points while Parks poured in 22 points. Lawson added seven to his “Senior Night” game.
“I was proud of the kids for stepping up and doing the things they needed to do,” Pietrowski said. “We did a better job reading the passes in the zone and were patient against it.”
“Defensively, we did a better job locating number 14 (Jalloh), but more importantly we rebounded better out of our zone,” said Pietrowski. “We turned some traps into some easy buckets.”
The Redhounds will travel to Harlan Friday for the regular season final. Pietrowski would like to see his team go out on a winning note. “We want to go out on a positive note. Harlan has been on some hard times and have had some kids out. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were ready to play Friday night.”
“We want to go up there and focus on this game and go out the way we need to,” said Pietrowski.
