REDHOUND – GRIDIRON
Corbin High School Football Coach Steve Jewell just completed his team’s Spring Practice and now it’s on to weight lifting and preparing for the summer sessions.
“We had a pretty good spring practice,” Jewell said. “We had about 35 kids out which is a pretty good number.”
Jewell said his team worked on the offensive line, defense and some offense during the spring practice sessions. “We lost a lot of linemen that we need to replace.”
The Redhounds lost 14 players to graduation including nine linemen. Brandon Howington, Cody Harp, Myrvin Grigsby, Tony Bernardo, Nick Mills, Austin Powers and Dakota Robinson are among the players Jewell will need to replace.
Not only were some big names lost on the line, but running back Matt Jewell will move on to the next level at the University of the Cumberlands. Receivers Josh Jewell, who set a record for catches in a game, and Hunter Grubb will be gone from next season’s lineup.
“We really didn’t work on trying to find replacements as much as fundamentals. We want to work on the basics this time of the year,” Jewell said.
The Redhounds didn’t have a Red/White game, “We scrimmaged a lot to put them in game situations,” Jewell said.
Jewell will, more than likely, depend on the running game again as much as possible. “We are pretty much 60-40 (run-pass) right now. I don’t see a lot of change in that scheme,” he added.
One question that will loom over the summer months is, will there be fight for quarterback? Taylor Waddle handled the chores last season with Corey Taylor doing the back-up duties. The two return, which should give the Redhounds depth.
The Redhounds will have a host of talent in the backfield with the likes of Dalton Anderson, Jake Coppock, Brian Nantz, Tanner Powers and William Reedy.
Jewell said he hasn’t thought much about next year’s district race or the consolidation of Monticello and Wayne County. The Cardinals will welcome the students from Monticello, which will officially close at the end of this school year.
The consolidation should push Wayne County into a higher class, but Jewell doesn’t think that will happen. “That’s up to the state (KHSAA). They are the ones that will make that decision,” he said. “But, it’s no different than when Harrodsburg went into Mercer County. They won a state title that year in Class 3A then went to 5A the next year.”
The Redhounds have four new teams on the 2013 schedule. They will open the season in the Ray Correll Bowl against Pulaski Southwestern, August 23 then host Perry County Central August 30 in the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic. It will be the teams first meeting.
Corbin will travel to Trimble County for a first-ever meeting September 6. They will host the Knox Central Panthers in the final regular season game, Nov. 6. The Redhounds and Panthers have met only once since the series ended in 1985 with a Corbin victory.
Corbin will continue its rivalry with South Laurel in London and will play Danville once again at Campbell Field.
The teams met in the 2008 Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic with the Redhounds winning 35-14.
