The Corbin Redhounds showed off the total package last Friday night scoring on the ground, through the air, and with special teams to route the Casey County Rebels 40-12 on the road.
Corbin Head Coach Steve Jewell was proud of the way his team came out and took care of business.
“One of the things we’ve been stressing this week is kind of having a business like attitude, said Jewell. “We felt like we were a better ball club, we told the kids that, but a lot of times when you’re on the road different things happen and weather changes, but they came out and got their business done. I was real proud of them being mature about the whole situation.”
The Redhounds struck early and often starting with the first possession of the game. Corbin got the offense going by completing passes to three different receivers, Eric Blackwood, Ryan Tate, and Lucas Henson. However, it was the Clint Cashen to Tate connection that went for the touchdown later in the drive. Tate hauled in an I I yard TD pass by tipping it to himself in the end zone. Chance Hendrickson made good on the point after kick to give Corbin a 7-0 lead.
Tate made his presence felt again when the Rebels were forced to punt on their opening series. Blackwood caught the punt and handed to Tate on a reverse,, which Tate took 80 yards to the end zone. Hendrickson then tacked on another point after kick to give the Redhounds a 14-0 lead with 7:31 to play in the first quarter.
Casey County tried to make the game interesting after getting the ball inside the Corbin territory to start a drive. The opportunistic Rebels were able to get just enough offense going to find pay dirt. Starting from the Redhound 40 yard line, Casey County relied on their running game. Marcus Patterson’s 26 yard run set the score up and Rick Marrapodi’s four yard touchdown burst got the Rebels yelling. The kick attempt was no good, leaving the score 14-6.
After Andy Millard’s 15 yard kickoff return,- Corbin’s offense was poised to strike again. First, it was Blackwood’s 24 yard reception getting the Redhounds into the red zone and then Henson hauled in a pass for eight yards to get inside the Casey County five yard line. Blake Freeman took it from there, running four yards to keep the points coming for Corbin. Chance Hendrickson’s kick was perfect and the Redhounds’ lead was 21-6.
Highlighted by an Anthony Miller sack, Corbin’s defense quickly forced the Rebels to punt after only three plays. The Redhound allowed just 120 yards of offense in the game.
When regaining possession, the Redhounds wasted little time in scoring again. On the second play, Blackwood caught a Cashen pass behind the defense and went 61 yards for another Corbin touchdown. The extra point was partially blocked and the score remained 27-6.
The defenses proved to be up to the challenge for the remainder of the half by holding each offense out of the end zone. Corbin’s Rob Maden was able to end a late Casey County threat by intercepting a pass to keep the Redhounds’ lead 27-6 at halftime.
After holding the Rebels to start the second half, Corbin picked up right where they left off. Freeman carried the ball four times on the drive for all 67 yards. The touchdown run came from three yards out to light the scoreboard up some more. Freeman finished the game with 101 yards on only eleven carries. Hendrickson’s extra point kick made it 34-6 in favor of the Redhounds.
Corbin added one last touchdown late in the third quarter. Using a balanced offensive attack,, the Redhounds moved down the field. Chance Hendrickson got the drive going with a 16 yard reception that Freeman followed up with runs of five and seven yards. Then, Corbin went back to the air to score their final touchdown. Tate and Cashen connected for a ten yard TD pass to cap the scoring for the Redhounds. Corbin finished the game very balanced, passing for 219 yards and running for 160.
The Rebels would add one late touchdown against the Corbin junior varsity when Patterson went 21 yards for the score. The kick failed and the score was 40-12, which held up as the game’s final score.
The win was Corbin’s fourth straight as they continue to show maturity and build steam as playoff time approaches.
“They have matured a lot, but also a win does a lot for your confidence,, said Jewell. “Even when your making mistakes your going at a little bit different speed a lot of times. Confidence does a lot for them.”
The Corbin Redhounds (4-5) will return home this -week in hopes of winning their fifth consecutive district championship as they face off with the Garrard County Lions. The Redhound family will honor its 2005 senior class, which includes Chance Hendrickson, Lucas Henson, Eric Blackwood, Jeremy Gibson, Jason Doran, Ryan Tate, Andy Millard, and Josh McHargue.
