Tournament Director Jimmy Hendrickson said this year’s Rebel Shootout went off without a hitch. “We didn’t have any rain so things went very well. We had a wide variety of teams from all over the state.”
“We had six teams from the area and three from the league which really helped our crowds,” he said. “We had a team from Jackson County that did really good and three teams from Somerset.”
Hendrickson said the champions, Complete Pharmacy was somewhat of a surprise winner. “They had some players from the team that won it last year, so I knew they would be pretty good.”
“There seem to be more travel teams in the tournament than league teams, but everyone is putting more travel type teams together now,” said Hendrickson.
“It was packed Friday and Saturday night,” Hendrickson said of the crowds that came out to watch the teams. “One of the biggest crowds came out to see Softball Times and Complete Pharmacy in the winners’ bracket final.”
There were 59 games played over the three-day classic with Barbourville hosting a portion of the tournament Saturday. Hendrickson said everything went well in Barbourville. “It was right up the road. Mike Trent, the Rec Commissioner in Barbourville helped run it along with Jimmy Mills. They were really glad to have it and the players like that deep center field.”
The Jokerz, a league team went 2-2 in the tournament. They beat the Fat Dads in the first-round then lost to the eventual champions, Complete Pharmacy. In the losers’ bracket they beat Shelby Auto of Shelbyville before being ousted by The Kings.
Runner Shop, another local team went 1-2. They were able to defeat Thunder in the first-game but lost the next two games to Monk and The Lizards. The Hit Squad was 1-2 in tournament play. They beat Wheeler Bats before losing to Boo and Kentucky Steel.
PRTC of Jackson County finished third in the tournament. Two Whitley County players, Matt Singleton and Jeremy Taylor played for PRTC.
