Corbin’s most popular City Commissioner said this week she’s ruling out any plans to run for Mayor this upcoming election, but will file again to seek another term on the town’s five-member board.
Suzie Razmus confirmed Tuesday that she will not file to participate in Corbin’s upcoming mayoral election, ending speculation that she would seek in the office in what would likely be a high-powered contest between Razmus and current two-term Mayor Willard McBurney.
“I think we have a good mayor now,” Razmus said. “There are a lot of great things going on in Corbin and I want to be a part of that, but I don’t think right now I have the time to devote to that.”
Razmus is co-owner of Tri-County Cineplex. She, her husband and other family members constructed the state-of-the-art movie theater, on Cumberland Falls Hwy. in south Corbin in Dec. 2004.
She also is owner of Suzie’s Espresso, a specialty coffee business located inside Vanderbilt University and the school’s hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
Razmus said running a business, being a wife and the mother to three children would make it extraordinarily difficult to devote the time necessary to be an effective mayor.
“Being mayor is something that takes a little more commitment of time that I am able to give right now,” Razmus said. “Willard does a good job. I wouldn’t want him thinking I’m gunning for his job or anything like that. I think this is the best decision for me right now.”
Razmus said she does plan to file to run for a second term as commissioner. The deadline to file for the office is Jan. 28, 2014.
Razmus was the top choice of city voters in the 2012 General Election, garnering 1,597 votes — 133 more than her next closest opponent, local physician’s assistant Joe Shelton. In a small city race, the margin was significant and instantly led to talk as a viable future mayoral candidate.
McBurney, popular in his own right, won his first term to office with a convincing 75 percent of the vote. He was unopposed for a second term.
McBurney said last week that he plans to file for a third term as Mayor.
