Williamsburg senior Dusty Brown tops the list of receivers in Class A football with 1,132 yards on 73 catches. He has eight touchdowns going into the KHSAA playoffs. Brown discussed football with Sports Editor Jim McAlister Monday afternoon. He is that question and answer session.
NJ: What do you enjoy most about football?
Brown: I love every bit of it. My friends and I have been playing football for a long time, it’s a bonding experience for all of us. I like coming out to play football, catching passes and scoring touchdowns.
NJ: Who has been the most influential person on your high school career?
Brown: I’ve had a lot of people like Coach (Jerry) Herron, my friends, teammates, but probably my dad. We have watched football together for a long time. I enjoy for him to come to my games and he enjoys coming to them.
NJ: What is it like playing with a quarterback like Ryan Moses?
Brown: He throws a catchable ball to me every time. He is a really good quarterback. A smart guy, smart on the field. We are really good friends off the field and he’s made my career fun.
NJ: Do you want to play college football?
Brown: Yes sir, I want to play college ball.
NJ: What position do you think you would be looking at in college?
Brown: Probably wide receiver
NJ: Are there any colleges showing interest right now?
Brown: I’ve got letters and I have visited EKU. I’ve had some stuff from Hanover, Rose College, Cumberland and Union. Nothing too serious yet.
NJ: Do you think your height plays an impact on your game? Brown is 5-9, 165-pounds.
Brown: Not really. I’m not the jump ball for us, I am more of the yards, deep threat guy. Being under 6-foot is not good, but it’s not that big of a factor for me.
NJ: How do you feel like your speed helps you?
Brown: I was a lot slower last year, but I worked in the off-season to get faster. I worked in the weight room and did sprints in the off-season and it has definitely helped me. I am more of a deep threat for my speed.
NJ: What has it been like playing for Coach Herron?
Brown: He loves the game, I love the game and we get along good. I’ve had him for my whole high school career and he has taught me a lot about the game. He taught me how to give everything I have for it.
NJ: Have you styled your game after anyone?
Brown: I’d say if I styled my game after anybody it would be Brett Favre. He’s tough. No matter if he has a broken hand, broke bones, a concussion, he comes out and plays the game no matter what has happened and I really respect that. He’s the iron man of football.
NJ: What do you like to do when you are away from football?
Brown: I love to fish, I went last weekend. Hang out with my friends, playing video games, my X-box. I like bass fishing.
NJ: How do you see the Jackets doing in the playoff?
Brown: I think we can go far, but we have to get past Fairview first. Anything can happen in the playoffs. The team that shows up and plays hard is going to win.

Coach Herron’s comments: “Dusty is one of our four-year starters here. He has started DB and wide receiver since he was a freshman and that was rare for us. When he started he was very small and very slow but was a kid that got after it. Dusty has worked phenomenal in the weight room and every year has gotten bigger, stronger and faster. This year he has worked so hard that he put himself in position to lead the state or be the runner-up in receiving. He has over 1,000 yards going into week 11. We are very proud of his hard work and it has all paid off.
He has had a very good senior season to go along with his junior, sophomore and freshman seasons. He has got a lot of balls for us and has a lot of yards. He is a team leader and a team captain. He is one of those kids that just comes along and makes it easy to come to work.”
