Police say texting cause of serious accident in Corbin Tuesday

One man was seriously injured after this two-car crash on US 25E in Corbin Tuesday afternoon.
LOL turned into OMG in the blink of an eye Tuesday when Marshellia French, 41, of Corbin glanced up from her cell phone to see the Pontiac sedan in which Roseanna Warren was riding, looming large in her windshield. The ensuing rear end collision when French failed to stop, resulted in Warren, 44, of Gray, being airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
Corbin Police say French said she was texting on her phone as she approached the intersection of U.S. 25E and Master Street about 11:45 a.m. The driver of the Pontiac, Norm McCreary, 55, of Gray, who had the green light, had turned left from Master Street onto U.S. 25E. The light changed and French continued through the intersection but failed to stop before she collided with McCreary.
Corbin firefighters were called to the scene and used the Jaws-of-Life to remove both doors on the passenger’s side in order to extricate Warren.
Traffic was rerouted through the Kmart parking lot and onto North Commonwealth Ave. while a helicopter landed on the roadway to transport Warren.
According to officals at UK, Warran is listed in serious condition.
The roadway was shut down for more than an hour as emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.
Neither French nor McCreary were transported to the hospital. Officer Steve Meadors, who is investigating the incident, said French went to the doctor on her own. She was expected at the Corbin Police Department later Tuesday afternoon to produce proof of insurance.
A law enacted in Jan. 2011 prohibits texting while driving. Offenders face a $25 fine for a first offense, plus court costs.
While neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to be factors in the crash, Meadors said French will be cited for texting while driving.
According to Kentucky State Police drivers who are texting are 23 percent more likely to be involved in a crash and often display the driving characteristics of a person who is driving under the influence of alcohol.

Hello. And Bye.
There is NO EXCUSE for this persons actions!!!
A $25.00 fee is NOT ENOUGH for this Texting
while driving… This lady could have KILLED
this person. I think that plenty of JAIL TIME
and a $2500.00 fee would be the better
judgement for ANYONE gulity of texting while
driving. Wait until it happens to a Judge’s family
member or the Police officer’s family member
and see what king of punishment they would
like to see imposed upon people like this lady
being stupid… WAKE UP out there, there is
NOTHING so important that can’t wait until
you are pulled over or out of the car to take
care of that all important TEXT!!!
You are so right J. When driving keep your eyes on the road. Yesterday morning a couple from Canada totaled my car just past exit 15 on 25W. Nephew saw they were looking every where but the road and crossed the line in his lane, he tryed to get out of their was but was hit, if they had gotten the drivers side my nephew would probably be at the funeral home. When your driving people keep your mind on driving, not texting or site seeing but the road
The only thing that should be on anyone’s mind while they are driving is the road in front of them. There should be no radio or mp3 players or smart phones or gps’s even allowed in a vehicle. The whole point of a trip is to make it there and back alive, and no one needs any of the above to accomplish the task of driving safely.
This is going to continue until more and more people get hurt or worse, there needs to be a more stepped up national campaign just like Drinking while Driving. I know there are several ads on TV and it helps to a certain point.
Stupid people! Tell them that it is dangerous and they do it anyway. Make a law against it, who cares. Looks like the phone companies are going to have to devise a plan to disable texting while in a vehicle. Could it be done? Sure. Will it? I doubt it. There are safety mechanisms on just about everything, why not this. You just can’t trust humans to make rational decisions.
