Police confiscate over 600 Oxycodone pills in traffic stop on I-75
Police confiscated over 600 Oxycodone pills worth nearly $47,000 after conducting a traffic stop late Wednesday morning on I-75 near Williamsburg.
Among the pills were $24,500 worth that the driver claimed had been given to him by a man in the pain clinic’s parking lot with instructions to deliver them to specific location in Kentucky, according to a police press release.
About 11 a.m., Commercial Vehicle Enforcement K-9 Officer Landry Collett spotted a 2005 Chevy Trail Blazer heading north on I-75 at a high rate of speed and swerving in and out of its lane of travel, Williamsburg Public Affairs Officer Shawn Jackson said in a press release.
Collett contacted Jackson and Williamsburg Public Affairs Officer Shawn Jackson, who stopped the vehicle near the eight-mile marker.
The subjects in the vehicle initially gave police a couple of different stories about where they had been. After a few minutes, one explained that they had been to a pain clinic in Florida, and were on their way back home to Campton, Ky., which is in Wolf County, according to the release.
While interviewing the driver, police noticed a bulge in one of his pant’s pockets, and discovered a large quantity of what was believed to be Oxycodone 30mg tablets in a plastic grocery type bag, Jackson wrote.
"The subject stated that he had been given the pills by a man in the pain clinic parking lot in Florida, and was told to deliver them to a specific location in Kentucky," Jackson wrote.
The 600 Oxycodone pills in his pocket had a street value of $24,500, according to the release.
The driver and passenger also both had large quantities of narcotics that were prescriptions from the pain clinic.
"It was determined that a transaction had taken place by the second male in the vehicle, where he and a female passenger had exchanged pills for the female to snort, according to witness statements," Jackson wrote.
Jackson charged the driver, Marvin Adkins, 36, of Campton, with speeding, careless driving and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.
Jackson charged the passenger and owner of the vehicle, Rondle Adkins, 55, also of Campton, with public intoxication and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.
He charged a third person in the vehicle, Eula N. Sowards with public intoxication. All three were lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center. Another female passenger was not charged with any crime, Jackson said.
"The total street value of these narcotics seized on this one traffic stop by Officer Jackson, including the prescriptions and the bag of pills in the male’s pocket, is estimated at almost $47,000," according to the press release.
