Police charge man with assault, DUI following crash on Corbin Bypass
A Corbin woman remains in serious condition after a two-car, head-on crash on the Corbin Bypass late Sunday night that resulted in felony charges against the driver who hit her.
Police said Charles Skagges II, 33, of Gray, was operating his vehicle under the influence of either drugs or alcohol when his 1988 Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the double yellow centerline of Corbin Bypass and slammed head-on into a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 57-year-old Nancy Sergent of Corbin. Skagges was traveling east at the time of the accident and Sergent was traveling west.
Additionally, Skagges was charged with first-degree assault for injuries Sergent suffered in the crash.
Authorities were alerted to the accident at about 9:30 p.m. and arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.
Rescue crews worked feverishly to free both Skagges and Sergent from their vehicles, which both lay in a ditchline over a hundred feet apart from each other. Corbin Fire Department personnel used the Jaws of Life to cut away the wreckage and free them from the vehicles.
Sergent was air lifted from the accident scene and taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Skagges was transported to Baptist Regional Medical Center and released after being treated for minor injuries.
An investigation is still pending by the Corbin Police Department. Lead investigator Jason Williams was assisted at the scene by Ptl. Glenn Taylor, Ptl. Jason Moore and Capt. Tim Helton, along with the Corbin Fire Department, the West Knox Fire Department and Corbin-Knox EMS.
