‘Planet Pink’ walk in Corbin raises funds, awareness for cancer

Participants in Monday’s "Planet Pink" cancer awareness walk traveled along Kentucky Ave. as part of their route.
In an effort to raise cancer awareness, and some much-needed funds for the fight against the deadly disease, Corbin Garden Club members led an effort downtown Monday they are calling "Planet Pink."
Corbin Garden Club member Carcille Burchette, one of the main organizers of the event, said "Planet Pink" is a twist off a statewide project undertaken by garden clubs called Plant It Pink. The idea is that members would plant pink flowers around their homes and areas in the community to raise awareness of breast cancer.
"We love that fact that this is kind of a twist on that project," Burchette said. "It’s a district wide promotion that we are doing in conjunction with Relay for Life. All the money we raise will go to the American Cancer Society."
About 60 people pre-registered to participate in MondayÕs Cancer Awareness Walk. Walkers started at the First Christian Church Shelter on Poplar Ave., and then walked over to Main Street, and back up Kentucky Ave. to their starting point.
All participates were wearing stylish, bright pink "Planet Pink" shirts as part of the effort.
Burchette said the walk raised at least $300 for the American Cancer Society. But coupled with other towns participating, it will be much more. Garden clubs in Middlesboro, London, Manchester, Pineville and Corbin all participated.
Burchette said Baptist Health Corbin was instrumental in helping to coordinate the walk Ñ selling t-shirts and accepting pre-registrations. She said she is hoping the effort spreads beyond the garden clubÕs district to the state level, regional level and maybe even nationally.
"This is just the start this year," Burchette said. "We are hoping this will be something we do ever year."
