Pink cement trucks part of new breast cancer awareness effort

A local concrete company is teaming up with the Baptist Health Corbin to raise awareness about breast cancer and help the hospital in its efforts to combat the disease.

Triple Crown Concrete, which operates plants across central and southern Kentucky, including Corbin and London, has dedicated three trucks in its fleet to the fundraising effort.

The three trucks have been repainted pink and white and are sporting the pink ribbon signifying the fight against breast cancer.

For each yard of concrete delivered by these trucks, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the hospital.

“You can’t go very far without seeing someone affected by breast cancer. It not only affects the person with the cancer but their entire family,” said Mel Howard, General Manager of Triple Crown Concrete. “Many of our coworkers and our customers have someone in their life that has been affected by this disease. Cancer is so wide-spread, and we want to help. Triple Crown Concrete wants to give back to the many communities it serves.”

Howard said one of the pink trucks will serve the tri-county market, working out of the Triple Crown Concrete plants in Corbin and London.

The truck will be part of the dispatch rotation.

“We would certainly try to honor any requests from our customers that want the pink truck,” Howard said.

“Please call us and keep the pink truck busy,” he said.

A formal dedication ceremony for the truck will be held at the hospital at 1:45 p.m. today.

Officials at Baptist Health said proceeds from the Triple Crown Concrete will be combined with other fundraising effort to go toward the purchase of a second 3D mammography unit.

“We have one unit already, but we need another because of the volume of patients,” said Debbie Hardin, Marketing/PR Coordinator at the hospital, noting the new unit would cost approximately $500,000.

Hospital officials said the 3D mammograms are capable of detecting more cancers than traditional mammography units.

“Cancer is one of those things that we can’t change but we can make a difference in the care that our patients receive,” said Baptist Health Corbin President Anthony Powers.

Triple Crown Concrete is a division of Hinkle Contracting Company, LLC, based in Paris Kentucky.

The construction materials and asphalt paving company was founded in 1942. It currently employees approximately 450 people in Central and Eastern Kentucky.

Triple Crown Concrete operates nine ready mix plants and 50 trucks across 10 counties throughout Kentucky.

“We furnish concrete on any size project from a sidewalk to high rise buildings,” Howard said.
