Pineville man arrested for leading deputy on vehicle, foot pursuit

Darrell Jones is accused of leading a Whitley County Sheriff’s deputy on both a vehicle pursuit and a foot pursuit.

A Pineville man is facing numerous charges after allegedly leading Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies on both a vehicle chase and a foot pursuit.

About 5 p.m. on July 10, Deputy Jonas Saunders was patrolling in the Canadatown community when he observed a red Ford allegedly disregard a stop sign as it turned from Log Cabin Road onto Highway 90, according to a sheriff’s department release.

Saunders attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but instead of stopping, the vehicle allegedly increased its speed driving erratically and at times endangering others, the release noted.

According to his arrest citation, Jones crossed into the other lane of travel several times, and ignored the stop sign at the Highway 90 and US25W intersection.

The vehicle traveled north on US25W and then turned left onto Highway 1193, which is also known as Bee Creek Road, going through the parking lot of the Dollar General store to get there, Saunders wrote on an arrest citation.

When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver, Darrell Jones, 24, of Pineville, fled on foot, but Saunders caught him and placed him under arrest after a short foot chase, according to the release.

Saunders wrote in the arrest citation that Jones admitted to taking meth.

Saunders charged Jones with numerous offenses, including, first-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), first-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot), DUI, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended or revoked license, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with physical evidence.

In addition, Saunders charged Jones with disregarding a stop sign, reckless driving, improper passing and failure to signal.

Jones also faces a charge of contempt of court and was served with two warrants for failure to appear.

He was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center and was still incarcerated there as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to the jail’s website.

Before Saunders left the jail, he conducted a search of his cruiser and found drug paraphernalia in the backseat area, the release also noted.
