PIGSKIN DEFEAT

According to Corbin football Coach Steve Jewell the effort was there Saturday night when the Redhounds faced the #1 team in Class 4A, the Boyle County Rebels. Corbin couldn’t stop the defending state champions from winning their 18th straight game with a 42-10 win over the Redhounds.
“I was really pleased with the kids effort, I thought they played hard and played consistent all night long,” said Jewell. “We made some mistakes that you can make against a team like that as far as alignment things, technique things that we ask kids to do that we have to correct.”
“We watched the film with them today (Monday) and I think they digested that a little and mentally I think they are OK because they did see the effort. You can see people hustling to the football,” Jewell said.
“We just have to correct our mistakes,” he added. “We can’t lay the ball on the ground and can’t throw in the interceptions against a team like they have,” Jewell said referring to three mistakes that lead to Boyle County points.
Corbin surprised a few folks by coming out throwing the football. The Redhounds even surprised Boyle County when it pulled off the picture-perfect onside kick to open the contest. Senior Josh Coppock recovered the loose ball and put the offense on the field at the 45-yard line.
Corbin went for the early touchdown when they sent Mitchell Frederick down the sideline on the first play of the game, but it was tipped away by a Boyle County defender. That was a big play according to Jewell. “If we would have hit that pass the very first play of the game it would have been a big momentum builder,” Jewell said. “We had a great momentum turn with our on-side and then we under threw the pass. It could have very well been 7-0 by the second play of the second play of the ballgame.”
“We feel like it should have been 14-10 at halftime of the ballgame,” said Jewell.
However, Boyle County held the Redhounds to three plays and a punt. Corbin did pinned the Rebels back to their own 13-yard line on the punt and forced the Rebels to punt the ball back after the 10-play drive was stopped at the Boyle County 39-yard line.
Three plays later Mitchell was intercepted by Mt. Football candidate Lamar Dawson at the Corbin 33-yard line with 4:44 in the opening quarter.
Boyle County junior Devon Cox broke loose for a 22-yard run before being hauled down at the 11-yard line. Two plays later quarterback Devon Hale took it in from six yards out for the first score of the game.
Corbin failed to muster any offense on its third possession of the game and had to punt after three plays from their own 20-yard line. The Rebels took over at their own 47-yard line, but a Hunter Grubb interception gave the ball back to the Redhounds at the Corbin 36-yard line.
The Redhounds (1-1) mounted a drive that took the ball down to the Rebels 14-yard line before Corbin had to settle for a 34-yard field goal by Saxon Okuma at the 8:13 mark of the second quarter.
The drive had two big plays, both passes from Mitchell. The Redhounds faced a third-and-five at their own 41-yard line when Mitchell hit Josh Jewell with a 10-yard pass for a first down. Later in the drive the ‘Hounds faced a fourth-and-nine at the 48-yard line when Mitchell faked the punt and hit Josh Cop pock going down the middle of the field for a 14-yard gain to the Boyle County 34. A nine-yard pass to Jewell and a five-yard penalty against Boyle County gave Corbin a new pair of sticks at the 20-yard line.
A short run by Brady Foley and a pass to Frederick pushed the ball down to the 14-yard line. However, Mitchell was caught for a third-yard loss and Corbin settled for the Saxon field goal.
The game quickly got out of hand when the Rebels answered with a Zach Hester touchdown from 10-yards out followed by the Will Harris PAT for a 14-3 lead with 6:18 left in the half.
After a Taylor run of 22 yards on the kickoff set up a first-down at the Corbin 22-yard line, Dawson picked off a Mitchell pass at the 45-yard line and went in virtually untouched for the score that put the Rebels ahead 21-3.
Another three-and-out forced the Redhounds to punt the ball. Mitchell’s punt covered 55 yards, but the Rebels responded quickly. A six-play drive ended with Chris Cook scoring from two yards out with 1:47 left in the half and Boyle County in command with a 28-3 lead.
Refusing to give up Corbin came back in the third quarter and shut down the Rebels’ offense while scoring on a 39-yard pass play from junior quarterback Ty Cobb to Taylor. The Redhounds closed within 28-10, but two fourth quarter touchdowns saw the Rebels win 42-10.
“We don’t feel like it should have been 42, but they took advantage of all the situations we gave them,” said Jewell. “That’s the sign of a good ball club and Boyle County has a very good ball club, I will be hard-pressed to see if we face another team like that this year.”
Cobb saw his first action at quarterback, starting the second half. Cobb hit on 7-of-14 for 122 yards. Taylor had four catches for 92 yards and Josh Jewell had four catches for 41 yards.
Matthew Taylor was named the MVP for the Redhounds while Cook won the honor for Boyle County.
