Photographers encouraged to enter NIBROC Photo Contest

If you are passionate about photography, or just like to dabble in the hobby, then you will once again have the chance to display some of your photos for everyone to see.

The Appalachian Photographic Society (APS) will again be sponsoring the NIBROC Photo Contest in conjunction with the 65th Annual Festival. It is the third straight year the club has organized the contest.

“The last two years, we’ve gotten quite a few entries,” said Peggy Yeager, President of the APS.

“We are very excited about it this year. The entries will be displayed at Corbin Cellars on Main Street. With the main part of the festival being on Main Street this year, we think it will give it a lot more visibility and there will be more interest.”

Yeager noted that the past two years, photos have been displayed at the old depot building on Depot Street. The problem is that it was hard for people to even know it was there because the entry to the exhibit was hidden behind carnival rides or games.

“I think it will be a better reception. It will be easier for people to come and view,” she said.

The APS is made up of area photography enthusiasts. Members of the group will judge the contest.

The contest had over 50 entries in 2016.

Yaeger said awards would be given this year for first, second and third places. Some honorable mentions will be awarded as well.
One photo will be chosen as the APS choice for “best in show” — the picture that, overall, judges feel is the top entry in the entire contest across all categories.

Also this year, the special Dr. Thomas G. Barnes award will be given again to honor the photograph “that captures nature in its most unique perspective.” Barnes is the late husband of Jamie Carter Barnes, who is also co-president of the APS.

Entries must be 5×7 or larger and participants may enter one photograph per category. There is no cost to enter. Categories include: People and still life, nature wildlife and pets, scenic, and enhanced or altered photos.

Photos can be mounted or matted and they can be framed, but glass must be removed.

Entry forms for the contest, which include rules and judging criteria, can be downloaded online at the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce website (www.southernkychamber.com). Yaeger said entry forms can also be found at various locations including the Corbin Public Library, Corbin Cellars, You and Me Coffee and Tea and at other businesses around town.

Entries may be dropped off at the Chamber of Commerce office at 1610 Cumberland Falls Hwy., Suite 8 anytime during normal business hours through Aug. 8. Entries will also be accepted Wednesday, Aug. 9 from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Corbin Cellars restaurant.

Photos will be judged Wednesday and will be on display during the duration of the NIBROC Festival.
