Patriots’ Williams Signs Free Agent Deal with Houston Texans
The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Football program had a very solid season in 2015 as they rebounded with a 7-3 record overall, just coming up short of making yet another appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series. Numerous Patriots would have stellar campaigns this year, but one Patriot continues to stand out with his explosiveness and athleticism as he now has moved on to pursue a career in the National Football League.
The Houston Texans have reached a free agent deal with former University of the Cumberlands wide receiver Wendall Williams (Syracuse, NY), one of the fastest incoming rookies in the country. Williams ran hand timed 40-yard dash in 4.19 seconds, which was a new NFL Combine record before being ran up to a laser-timed 4.32, and had a 45-inch vertical leap at an NFL regional combine in Minnesota. The 45-inch vertical jump also ties the record for the combine.
During his senior season, Williams had 15 catches for 457 yards and eight touchdowns as a receiver. He coupled that with 204 rushing yards and three touchdowns, returned one punt for a touchdown, returned three kickoffs for touchdowns. Two of those kick return touchdowns came against NCAA Division II Carson-Newman where he set a new NAIA record for kick return yards in a single game (287 yards on 5 returns) and tied the record for kick return touchdowns in a single game.
As a junior, Williams had 16 catches for 326 yards and three touchdowns and 112 rushing yards and one touchdown. That same year, he was also a NAIA All-American in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the 2015 NAIA National Champion in the long jump.
Williams reports to Rookie Mini Camp on Thursday, May 5th as full team training camp opens in mid-July. Follow Wendall’s progress with the Texans by visiting www.houstontexans.com.
