Overtime Loss
Playing without three starters the Whitley County Colonels gave the Campbell County (Tn) Cougars all they could handle before falling in overtime, 39-33. The Colonels lost the services of senior J.J. Morgan to a broken ankle during the Russell County game Friday night.
Already without Travis Raper and Jeremy Taylor, the Colonels faced a much bigger Campbell County team that had beaten Whitley County in Jacksboro back on December 16, 65-53.
First-year coach Darrell Guffey decided to dictate the tempo of the game in an effort to slow down the Cougars.
The strategy worked as Whitley County jumped out to a 6-0 lead with some patient play and good defense. Junior Josh Roaden scored the first two baskets while Calvin Capps added the third basket for a 6-0 lead forcing the Cougars into a time-out.
Campbell County came back with back to back baskets and pulled within a bucket.
Senior Sammy Wilson hit a three pointer with 2:50 on the clock then scored on a drive down the lane as Whitley County led 11-4.
Roaden scored his sixth point of the quarter as Whitley County led 13-8 at the end of the period.
From that point on the pace slowed even more, but it was the Cougars a little more accurate from the field.
A Roaden basket late in the second quarter gave Whitley County a 17-12 lead but a three pointer by Jeremy Overbey cut the lead to two (17-15). Wilson pushed the lead back out to four before Curtis Taylor, a 6-4 forward, scored back to back baskets and sent the teams to the dressing room all tied up, 19-19.
The Colonels, behind Wilson, charged out to a 24-21 lead with the senior scoring all five points. But the visitors came right back with a basket by Overbey and a three-pointer by Jeremy Hously for a 26-24, their first lead of the game.
Wilson and senior Adam Prewitt pushed the lead back onto Whitley County’s side of the scoreboard at the end of the quarter, 29-28. Wilson hit three of four from the line while Prewitt scored from the paint.
A little cat and mouse saw the teams hold the ball in the final quarter with Jordan McCumbers scoring for the Colonels off a loose ball with 3:40 remaining. Roaden missed on a chance to put the Colonels ahead by three when he missed the front end of a bonus with 1:38 left. Campbell County got the rebound and held the ball. A three point basket by Housley gave Campbell County a 33-31 lead.
Whitley County called a time-out with :27 left to step up its final seconds. Freshman Cody Jones went down the lane for a basket sending the game into an overtime period.
Taylor put Campbell County ahead 35-33 with a minute left in the overtime. Wilson had a chance to tie the game from the line but missed the front end of the bonus. The Colonels were forced to foul five times before sending Minton to the line with :27 left. He hit the first of two free throws but missed the second. However, Overbey grabbed the rebound and hit a close range shot to push the lead out to five.
Wilson led the Colonels with 15 points while Roaden finished with 10 points.
The Colonels will be back in action Thursday night when they travel down to Jellico for a doubleheader with the Lady Colonels.
