Looking defeat square in the eyes the Corbin Minor League All-Stars refused to quit in an elimination game at Jackson County Saturday against the South London “A” All-Stars. Down 9-0, Corbin fought back to defeat the Laurel County boys, 12-11.
Corbin faced nearly the same scenario Sunday against North Laurel and trailed 8-0 after three innings before mounting a serious rally. Corbin ended up losing the game 8-5 but had the tying run at the plate to end the game.
North 8, Corbin 5
Corbin fell behind 4-0 in the bottom of the first as the North Laurel bats took advantage of a slow start by Corbin’s Zack Henson. The North London boys added three more in the bottom of the second and one in the third for an 8-0 lead.
But here come the future Redhounds in the top of the fourth. Nick Howington hit a Tyler Cooke pitch over the centerfield fence for a three-run homer. Hunter Grubb, who reached base on a fielder’s choice and Derrick Terry, who was hit by a pitch, scored on the play.
Either team made much of a threat in the fifth inning. As matter of fact, Henson became stronger as the game went into the late inning. He retired seven of the final eight batters he faced.
Corbin rallied in the top of the sixth but came up short when Terry led off with a single. Howlington followed with a double when his hard line drive hit Trent Merritt in the foot at third base and bounced down third base line into the outfield. Terry scored on the play and cut the lead in half, 8-4.
Henson moved the runner to third on a sacrifice but Tanner Powers popped out for the second mark against Corbin. A double by Chad Brown drove in Howington as Corbin pulled within three runs. Tucker Jones reached base on a fielding error by Cooke and runners were at first and third.
Christopher Hedrick grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
