Ossoli Club to present 70th Annual May Day Festival
Elsewhere in Kentucky, Derby season may open with fireworks, elegant parties, or parades. In Corbin, Derby season kicks off with a completely different race, a fundraising race, and Derby weekend itself this year will open with the 70th Annual May Day Festival, where the Ossoli Club of Corbin applauds and rewards the girls who have raised money for the community.
A Corbin institution, the May Day Festival involves local children from preschool through high school in fundraising, community involvement, and creative performance. Kindergarten and high school girls participate in the Queens’ races and children of varying ages participate in the musical program. The theme of this year’s program is “Seven Decades of May Day.”
The May Day Queens’ races center around a fundraising competition between girls in two different age brackets. Tenth grade girls compete for the title of May Day Queen, and girls of kindergarten age compete for the title of Tiny Queen. If you would like to vote for a candidate of either age, just make a donation to her fundraising campaign at her sponsoring merchant. Votes cast by check should be made payable to the Ossoli Foundation with the name of the candidate on the check’s memo line.
Half the May Day proceeds each year go directly to the classrooms and groups that participate in the program. The other half is used for community improvement projects year-round. Large projects in the past have included significant contributions to building improvements at Corbin High School and St. Camillus Academy, but May Day proceeds each year also benefit a number of programs, including Girl Scouts, Corbin’s United Effort, and the Corbin Public Library.
This year’s May Day Festival will take place on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at the Arena. Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster or at the Arena Box Office. For more information, contact one of the May Day Chairs: Christina Bentley at 523-9598 or Anita Champlin 523-1245.
