OPEN WITH WIN
The Corbin Lady Redhounds opened the round ball season with a convincing win over the Monticello Lady Trojans Monday night at Gilliam Gym with a 70-53 victory.
Monticello scored the first basket of the game, but the Lady Redhounds went on an 8-0 run and never looked back. Sophomore Miranda Wilson scored seven of her game-high 14 points in the first period as Corbin led at the first stop, 15-9.
“We set the tone early tonight and got the quick lead,” Corbin Coach Jennifer Parsons said. “We made a lot of scores in transition. We play well at a fast pace.”
It was sister, Kayla Wilson and Sarah Ashley taking charge in the second quarter as Corbin stretched its lead out to 20 by halftime, 36-16. Wilson scored eight points in the period while Ashley had seven of her nine points.
Monticello actually outscored the Lady Redhounds in the second half, 37-34, but Parsons went deep to the bench. The Lady Trojans never threatened to get back in the game. Mallory Wood, a 5-8 junior, scored six points to lead Corbin to a 49-30 score heading into the final quarter.
“We have the ability to play with a lot of teams,” Parsons said. “I think that was evident tonight. We have a lot of players that we can look to score, and that should give us confidence-moving forward. One of our strengths is that we are a very unselfish team.”
Seven players shared the scoring in the final eight minutes with Miranda Wilson leading the way with five points. Natalye Gallagher, a 5-10 freshman, had two baskets in a reserve role for the Lady Redhounds.
The schedule gets a little tougher for the Lady Redhounds over the next three games. They will host Bell County Tuesday night before taking on Mercer County, Dec. 9 at Gilliam Gym. South Laurel comes to Corbin for a district game, Dec. 12.
“We’ve got some difficult games ahead of us, including big games against Bell County, Mercer County, Barbourville and South Laurel, so it was important to get this first win at home tonight.”
“We’re a young team. We’re inexperienced, but that’s okay,” Parsons said. “We have to continue to grow and learn. We are nowhere near as good as I feel we are going to be.”
