One Woodbine man dead, two charged with murder Friday

A pair of Woodbine residents are now behind bars charged with killing another Woodbine resident Friday morning.

Charles McVey is charged with murder, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment in the death of Matthew Welsh.

Late Friday evening, Kentucky State Police Post 10 in Harlan announced that Joseph Masters, 33, and Charles “CJ” McVey, 37, were charged with murder, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and kidnapping (adult).

The duo are accused of killing Matthew Welsh, 36, who was found deceased after an altercation involving a stabbing that took place at his residence involving Masters and McVey, according to the preliminary investigation.

At 8:18 a.m. Friday, KSP received a call from the Knox County Sheriff’s Department requesting assistance with a death investigation on Heddon Flats Road.

McVey was located by the Corbin Police Department and taken into custody.

He is now lodged in the Knox County Detention Center where he was booked at 9:34 p.m. Friday, according to the jail’s website.

Masters was located in Campbell County, Tennessee, and is currently lodged in the Campbell County Detention Center awaiting extradition back to Kentucky, according to the release.

He was apparently booked into the Tennessee detention facility at 3:39 p.m. Friday, according to online records.

State police have not released a motive in the killing.

KSP Detective Kevin Howard is continuing the investigation.
