ON TO THE FINALS
The Corbin Redhound boy’s soccer team (12-6-3) is one step closer to a regional championship after defeating the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets (0-12) Monday night, 7-2.
Corbin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sophomore Lucas Canineu, senior Jesse Hyde and junior Tulio Canineu all scored goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. Tulio Canineu would add on another goal with 4:35 left in the first half to extend the Redhound lead to 4-0 before a goal by Middlesboro at the :42 mark made it 4-1 going into the half.
Canineu scored his third goal of the night early in the second half, followed by goals from sophomores Dylan Browne and Jonathon Carper. Middlesboro scored one goal in the second, giving the Hounds the 7-2 victory.
“I thought we played well and were consistent,” said coach Armando Cima after the game. “I don’t think we played as complete a game as we could have, but a win is a win.”
Corbin will now host Oneida Baptist Institute (9-6-2) Wednesday night, and Cima knows that this game will likely be much more competitive for his team.
“They looked good tonight,” Cima said of OBI Monday after having the chance to watch them defeat the North Laurel Jaguars 2-1. “They really moved the ball well, and looked very active out there. We are going to have to match that focus and intensity Wednesday night, and we’ll have the move the ball quicker ourselves.”
Corbin defeated OBI earlier in the season on their field. Cima is hoping the fact that this game will be played in Corbin, on a larger field, will work to his team’s advantage.
Game time for the Region 13 championship matchup between the Corbin Redhounds and the OBI Mountaineers is set for 7:30 at Corbin Primary School.
