Officials investigating blaze at Corbin home
For the second time in a week, firefighters were called to battle a blaze at a home on Scuffletown Road in Corbin … but this time, they were unable to save the home.
Police say they received a 911 call at about 4:05 a.m. Monday morning of a fire at 184 Scuffletown Road. Authorities say the residence is owned and occupied by Edith Lawson. She was not home at the time of the blaze.
When members of the Corbin Fire Department arrived, flames were jutting out of the roof of the single-level home. It took over four hours to totally extinguish the blaze.
Corbin Police Capt. Tim Helton said he is investigating the fire along with members of the Kentucky State Fire Marshall’s Office.
“It’s unknown at this time what caused the fire,” Helton said. “I don’t know where it started, but there’s an idea. The State Fire Marshall is investigating it as well to determine a cause and origin.”
Helton took samples from four different portions of the home Monday morning for analysis. Though officials would not say if the fire appeared suspicious, collection of evidence and the fire marshal’s involvement suggests it may be the work of an arsonist.
According to Corbin Fire Department Chief Gary Disney, firefighters were at Lawson’s house last week. On that occasion, damage was minimal and contained to the kitchen area.
Helton said he spoke briefly with Lawson and said she was “very upset” when she found her home destroyed.
No one was injured in the blaze.
