Oak Grove Elementary School temporarily placed on lockdown Tuesday

Whitley County authorities have detained a woman, who showed up at an elementary school late Tuesday afternoon while possibly under the influence.

About 4 p.m. Tuesday, administrators at Oak Grove Elementary School called police reporting that a woman was in the front office of the school requesting to use the phone, but that authorities suspected she was under the influence once she got inside, according Whitley County Superintendent John Siler, who issued a press release Wednesday afternoon.

The school was placed on soft lockdown.

Constable Ron “Bubba” Bowling was on Cumberland Falls Highway near the school when law enforcement was notified, and was at the school within about two minutes. He was the first officer on the scene.

Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Jonas Saunders, School Resource Officer Lt. Dave Lennon and Whitley County Chief of Police/911 Director Jason Wilson all arrived on scene within seven minutes of school officials calling authorities.

“Upon their arrival, they placed the individual under arrest. At the time she was detained, it was determined by law enforcement that she had a metal flashlight and had concealed a knife in her back pocket. Students did not come in contact with this individual at any time,” Siler wrote in the release.

Bowling said that authorities from two different agencies are still working trying to confirm the woman’s identity before releasing her name.

“It wasn’t a major incident. It was resolved quickly,” Bowling added.
