North Corbin man charged with assaulting wife, threatening her with gun

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies say a Corbin man was under the influence of alcohol when he allegedly assaulted and later pointed a gun at his wife Sunday morning.

Forty-two-year-old Joel Paul Adkins is facing one count of fourth-degree assault – domestic violence.

Deputies were called to a residence on Sandy Mills Lane, off of Adams Road, in north Corbin about 3:15 a.m. in response to a domestic violence complaint in which gunshots had allegedly been fired.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said when deputies arrived, they determined no shots had been fired. However, based on the investigation, they learned Adkins had allegedly struck the victim in the face and grabbed her around the throat.

“The female victim had red marks on both sides of her throat and swelling to her face,” Acciardo stated.

“Deputies also learned that he had allegedly pointed a gun at her,” Acciardo added.

Adkins pleaded not guilty to the charge Monday in Laurel District Court.

Judge Wendell “Skip” Hammons set the case for a pretrial conference on April 25.

Adkins’ bond was set at $2,500 cash. In addition, Adkins is to have no contact with the victim and possess no firearms.

Adkins remains in the Laurel County Detention Center.
