NO RECORD
If you do not think that you play to the level of your competition, witness two games, first the opening game of the football season for the Corbin Redhounds against Rockcastle County. The Rockets were hard pressed to get anything out of their offense. The defense of the Rockets scratched out a safety for a 2-0 victory.
The game was very close to being the lowest total output for points in any Corbin football game ever played save a couple of 0-0 ties.
Fast forward now to the past Friday evenings’ encounter with the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets when the Jackets and Redhounds raced up and down the field with the Yellow Jackets coming out on top, 62-42. Were the 104 total points of both teams a record of any sort? Well, no.
Somerset and Williamsburg scored 105 the same evening, with the Briar Jumpers winning 66-39.
The actual total points recorded in a Corbin Redhound football game was 143, and all those points were scored by the Pineville Mountain Lions in the 1923 game. The final score Pineville 143, Corbin 0. It was the first football game ever played by Corbin High School and marked not only by the lopsided loss but also by the only fatality ever suffered by the Redhound program during a game as young William Alford Cadle died during the game.
The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets of 2006 are a very talent laden group made up of mostly seniors and are certainly a threat to go a long way in the AA playoffs.
The Redhounds fought hard and were led once again by Clint Cashen, who simply would not allow the Redhounds to quit.
Cashen bombarded the Jackets with 25 completions for 448 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for two touchdowns himself.
The receivers were plentiful with passes going to Josh Sanders, Rob Madon, Jake Reeves, Jordan Wagers and Corey Sewell.
Do not be surprised if somewhere down the line these two teams do not meet again this year in the playoffs.
I went to the hospital Thursday to see Curt Selvy, who is a little under the weather and ran into one of Curt’s brothers, David. It was great to see David after all these years. David lives in California now, but told me he reads the News Journal on line and that it brings back fond memories of his growing up days.
David shared many memories of the teams he played on at Corbin and in particular the 1958-59 team. David said he felt that team, with a break or two, could have won a state championship. David said Jerry Smith, who was the star of that Redhound team “was the best player in the state of Kentucky that year’. but as luck would have it Jerry was sick with 104 temperature the night they lost to Harlan in the 13th regional final.
I too remember that 58-59 team well and agree with David’s assessment, the ‘Hounds were the best team in the state and Jerry Smith was the best player in the state. David was very quick to give credit to all his teammates, but David Selvy was an outstanding player himself.
As i signed a list of visitors who came by to see Curt, I noticed Jerry Bird’s name on the list and a former Redhound football coach and close friend of Curt’s, Ledger Howard. Howard coached the Redhounds to the state AA finals in 1962.
That ’62 team owned a regular season win over Danville and the great playoff win over Fort Thomas Highlands, but on that particular cold Thanksgiving Day in ’62, the ‘Hounds came up a little short and left Stoll Field in Lexington as a state runner-up to Danville.
The Redhounds coveted a great pair of tackles on that team with Kenny Cox and the late David Burton.
Both Kenny and David went on to success in their professional lives with Kenny occupying many positions of responsibility in the Fayette County School system and David was an attorney and later our District Judge before passing away prematurely.
I read in the Herald-Leader last week of the suspension of Duffer Duffey as the coach of Henderson County football team for reasons of harassment of one or more of his players. I find that very sad and think of when Charlie Bradshaw was coach of the Kentucky Wildcats. Bradshaw was a Paul “Bear” Bryant want to be. Bradshaw ran off the drones and with the drones he also ran off some of those who were not drones but good kids with potential but refused to be bullied by a power starved maniac. Football is a game and should be taught as such.
